700 gallon tank, or how i spent my daughters inheritance

Is there enough flow in the tank? Add some waveboxes they move alot of water. That way your display tank can stay fre of dirt.

calcium carbonate will cause sand clumping. If your Alk levels are too high from dosing, it will pricipitate out of solution and bind up your sand. if the clumps aren't very hard to break up, it could also be bacteria binding up the sand. I'm not sure the cause of that clumping, but just read about it somewhere in my past.

the flow is different than when the tank was first set up. i now have four tunzes in addition to the return pump and closed loop hammerhead.

i also have surges that are not running now until i redo the main tank.

any pictures of the equipment room overhaul?
status updates, ect?

it doesn't really look any different from the outside. see the photos above.

i am just on hold more or less now until i get the replacement sand from Nature's Ocean to replace the quartz sand with aragonite. we are close to getting the shipping from Florida worked out.

there does appear to be some changes since i did take the concrete and sand out of the sumps though. there are more small crustaceans. tiny <1mm on the viewing pane in the algae film, to other swimming ones, and others on the LR to more mysis shrimps. so that is cool.

i got a new male trigger that came out of QT a couple of weeks ago.

the 20 gallon aiptasia and Bergia tank. 1 Korallia 1, heater and 19 watt light. no sump, filter, or skimmer.

hard to see but there is a Bergia in the middle of the photo and the hitch hiking urchin

a couple of weeks ago i put some anenomes into the tank. the clowns immediately adapted them as their new home.

then they spawned.

the anemones have expanded to twice the size they were when they were in the garage tank. same water, different flow, light. what made them expand more?

here is a little reef related question. what could have caused my fingernail to grow out like this?

did you injure the nail bed (area just proximal to the nail)? it can cause the nail to grow out this way, also fungal infections are quite common causes, there are other less common causes like psoriasis (grooving or pitting) and other systemic disorders but generally involve more than one nail

she loves to kick sand in my face

why do they do this?

these last two are videos. click to watch.

Elliot-

it is reef related, and yes, just proximal to the nail is where the injury occurred. you can sort of see the spot about 1/4" from the nail in the last picture.

yep, that's it! you injured the nail bed, may or may not heal, worse case you'll have a funny looking nail with a good story behind it :D

any guesses as to what caused the injury while working in the tank?

hmm, these types of injuries are mostly due to crushing and thus deforming the nail bed, for example hitting the finger with a hammer, although it's possible that an infection could be deforming the nail bed, such as a fungal infection, how do you know it's reef related? aren't you a roofer?

true, i am a roofer but i know exactly when the injury happened and my hand was in the tank at the time.

it was a stab wound from a diadema urchin about 1/4" above the nail bed.

Do you just out grow it? As your nail grows it gets higher and higher.

Cannon7- it has just grown out with the nail. it was originally under the skin where the injury is. i didn't know the nail bed was so far under the skin.

thank you. it has great potential that is far from realized. it is getting better though. i think it is time to put in a coral or two to see what happens, even before emptying the main tank to change the sand. a friend has a couple of test frags for me.
