700 gallon tank, or how i spent my daughters inheritance

Do you just out grow it? As your nail grows it gets higher and higher.

the nail grows from the nail bed which is proximal to the nail under the skin, any injury to the nail bed will cause aberrations to the growth of the nail, when we want to remove a nail and stop future growth we destroy the nail bed surgically

The absolute worse reef injury I've ever incurred was a diadema spine through the finger while dredging out sand during a tank move.

MAN! That hurt! Got infected too ... NASTY!!!

did you know that urine dissolves the spines? next time pee on it! :D

do you have first hand experience with dissolving a spine? i doubt that. i have a couple of spines in the tank that are loose. i will pull one out and test that idea.

Carl

i haven't peed on a spine yet.

i have a few of these in the 20 gallon aiptasia tank. it is about 1.25-1.5"

i have hundreds of the mini brittle stars in the system, and many Asterina stars as well. will a Harlequin shrimp eat either of them?

the urchin was a hitch hiker

note the algae on the rocks. maybe i need more cows, er, tangs.

this morning my wife called to say EMERGENCY, EMERGENCY!!! the tank is 1/3 empty. the CL pump just under the tank had broken a seal and was leaking water, about 300 gallons total. fortunately i had 300 gallons heated and ready to go for a water change.

nothing quite so scary as finding that there is 300 gallons of water on the floor.

i shut off the valves at either side of the pump and stopped the leak. unfortunately a power strip under the tank got soaked but fortunately the GFI tripped on that strip. that shut off the return pump and stopped the sumps from emptying any more.

the water level had dropped below the level of the Tunzes and so there was no flow in the tank. my wife saw all this when she came back from the hour dog walk. i was fine when i left a couple hours before. so in maybe two hours 300 gallons drained from the system.

periodically turn all those valves so they will stay from of stuff living on them and preventing them from closing when you need them.

the sumps were also down several inches.

i have outdoor covers for all the wall outlets but that didn't help when i had a powerstrip plugged into one on the shelf just under the tank. so when it got wet the gfi kicked off shutting off the skimmer and return pump so there was no water flow thru the sump tanks.

water is back in the tank and flowing properly. the one circuit is still off to dry out.

i have used a bunch of these in my system for mounting the LR on.

i have had persistent problems with sps corals dying for no apparent reason.

a friend suggested that maybe the concrete blocks are toxic.

i know many people make their own rock from concrete. are the blocks that different?

as some of you may know i am about to redo my system. should i remove all of these when i do?
I always thought concrete used in those blocks could be somewhat toxic. Id take them out. Also, wht type of metal are you using for the rods?

i have taken out all the blocks in the sumps that you see in the picture above. however, they are still in the display.

the rods are acrylic.

i probably should not get a Harlequin shrimp as long as i have the two Hawkfish, Falco and Flame.

a word about the leak. the GFI worked as it should shutting off the power to the power strip when it was dripped on. the wall plugs were protected by a plastic cover and no permanent damage was done except to the power strip which i threw out.

the tank water motion is now just the return pump which sits on the garage floor and 4 Tunzes. one nice thing is it is a lot quieter without the Hammerhead pumps right under the tank. it is a little disconcerting when i first get near the tank. it sounds like something is wrong as it is almost dead quiet without that pump on.

Oh NO! the new crosshatch trigger is acting like the old one before it jumped out. last full moon time the triggers were courting. for a few days at sunset the male was chasing the female around. then he disappeared into the rockwork in the middle of the tank about 6 days ago where he remains today. i can get a glimpse of him and he is still in the same spot peering back at me.

these videos were shot a few days before he went into the rockwork. these were shot in the midafternoon. he would swim back and forth for a couple of hours.
click on the image to watch the video.

Man, those are some fat looking tangs! Umm ... what were we supposed to be looking at? Oh yeah, crosshatch trigger. I'm not any kind of expert, but is it possible that your tank just isn't long enough for such a large, active fish?

the tangs are healthy looking aren't they?

i suppose it is possible but it is 8' long and 700 gallons. and they were healthy enough to do spawning behavior.

i wish i knew. he is still looking out at me from the rockwork. at least he has not jumped out like the last one.

the last one jumped just after i left for a four day ski trip. my daughter called crying. "the fish is on the floor dead"

i don't know what would be tougher than a large trigger fish, but could something in your tank be harrassing the male crosshatches? perhaps the only thing tough enough for that duty would be your female? maybe she has a mean streak you haven't observed yet?

the only aggression i ever see is a bit of posturing with the tangs. the female trigger is a couple inches smaller. i have not seen any problems between the two. if anything it is him harassing her spawning.

none of the fish have shown any interest in the triggers.

he is still there in the rocks tonight. by this day last time the male had jumped out of the tank. could it be normal mating behavior.

just weird.

Since taking the sand and concrete blocks out of my sumps a few weeks ago i have had a resurgence of algae in the DT. the algae grows much faster on the viewing panes and there is little colonies of Bryopsis scattered about.

what eats that stuff? none of the fish seem interested in it.

my water parameters.
pH 8.4
temp 81
Ca 425-450
Mg 1300 i am slowly bring it up from 1200 a few weeks ago.
dKH 10-11
PO4 0.09ppm
NO3 10-15 ppm

the anemones seem to like the DT. i think i may put a few more in there.

be careful with the anemone's
a friend of mine started out with 1 GBTA, and now his 7ft tank is half full. he cant get them to stop splitting. he has physically pulled about 10 out and flushed them and you cant even tell........ (he also has about 35 clowns in there that he hatched him self.

how is the sump room coming.
at one point you talked about re-routing everything, and later i recall you saying that you left it as is, but just removed the blocks and such.
did you ever re plumb your skimmer and such or just leave it as is?

i love this build... i want a big tank.

thank you-

i just took out the sand and blocks in the sumps. skimmer, tanks and all is the same.

the nems are cool looking in the DT. i am still awaiting the replacement aragonite sand and i will be redoing the main tank after that. when i redo the main tank i will put the nems at one end with no connected rockwork to the other 2/3 of the tank.

so much work and so little time.
