9 new Banger additions

Great job on the breeding!
I had a question if you don't mind; I posted it on another thread, but figured I might as well ask here also.
Is there NO  way to tell the sexes of the Banghai a person has? My girlfriend has 2 in her nano that she wants to pair up and I am worried that she doesnt have a male/female. They are showing no signs of aggression towards each other and are often swimming closely together. They are about 1.5 in long (not counting the tail, 2.5 with). Any help/suggestions would be greatly appreciated

Thank you!

In my limited experiece...as I am still a newbie...I can't tell the difference. I think there is a way that exists for visually identifying and that has something to do with the vent. My babies are about 6 weeks old now and I am starting to see some "bullying" in the tank that they are in. Not extreme agression like you would see with adult Bangaiis, but there is something definitely there. With that, I would believe you would be seeing that now (possibly the dominant male in the open, and the other male hiding somewhere) If I were to gues, I would say you either have 2 females or a pair. If it is a pair, you'll start seeing the female do her little dance around the male to get him ready. It takes a little while for them to reach sexual maturity as well. Even though they may be at the adult size. This is just what I have viewed and experienced over the last 18 months or so. YMMV

Reggie, nice job so far. I breed them as well. If you are going to be in the club the correct spelling is Banggai. You will look more official that way.

Congrats ..your doing a great job..as far the the 120gal tank .that where i started it was to much to catch the male and or the babies i have more them to a smaller tank ..my pair have been breeding a few years now ..his last batch was a whooping 51 babies with no casualties.un believeable..I've done some research and it appears to be one of the largest batch to have no deaths..there are sold..his is now holding.its been months.i've change tanks on them again..so that really upset them.. but hopefully I'll get more babies.all there other batches where around 13-16..so i can not wait to see how many he'll have after the large batch of 51.they seem even larger ,which holding that many you would think smaller..
well either way ,its exciting .I'm now breeding redi seahorses, which i have 13 that are 80 days old. my next adventure is pipefish..i have given up on my clowns.lol.

Taibabygirl2, plz give a few pointers! What are the secrets to getting them to feed on frozen foods and any others for success?

Pay close attention to what macchicks said above about feeding the small, even "dust-like" particles to the young when weaning them off NHBS. I start offering this mess about 7 days of age, and they're on it by week 2, so the labor of NHBS is limited. No SFS with this varied diet, and HIGH success rates.

Also, I endorse rockstar's advice about catching males in the late night. I sometimes catch him on about day 20 or so, late at night, and let him spit out babies while he's in a ten gallon. When he opens his mouth after the tiny NHBS, I know he's delivered a full load.

And the subtlety of your sarcasm might be lost on the rest of us, Jambi40-6&2. Consider that there are reports of consistent broods of >50 fry with higher temps, good conditioning diets, and older (more experienced?) males. So hats off to tiababygirl2, you're among the elite.

FWIW

As of today, the first batch is 7 weeks old and the second is 2 weeks old. Just saw today that poppa is holding again. I'll try to gets some pics this week for an update. I went shopping today and got a 28 gallon JB nano cube that I am going to setup for the young ones to grow out in. It's not the optimal growout tank, but it is all I have room for at the moment. I want to start looking at getting these to the LFS at around 12 - 15 weeks of age and I believe the JBJ may do the job.

Loved the videos!
What size are the older ones now?

Sorry....
I wanna be in the club, so I must spell Banggai correctly, must spell Banggai correctly, must spell Banggaii correctly. Dang it! Start again. Must spell Banggai correctly.....

Back it up then. Show us were to find these reports.

Ok I have a question... Everything I have read says you should raise your banggai for 6 months. I know my first batch took 6 months to get what I would call acceptable size, body not fins dime size. At 12 weeks I would of only considered letting them go to a close friend if I was sure they would be alone in the tank because they were just to small.

How big are the bodies not the finage of yours at 12 weeks?

Also I saw you say your newest batch is 2 weeks and the male is already holding. Why are you not holding him seperate longer and fattening him up? I have heard of males giving out and dieing because they dont have enough time to fatten up between holds.

Please note I am not judging just asking

Jambi40-6&2: Do a search or head over to marine breeders and do some reading. There are reports of 40+ and I have seen a couple in the low 50's myself. Overt critism and sarcasm isn't contributing to the greater good here. Its best to question things but think about how you do it and read a bit before you do.

What fun are these threads if you can't get a few feathers ruffled sometimes. Thanks for the info nauticac. It says there has been 50 fry released, however not anything about all of them surviving to selling size unless it's later on in the pdf. I am not trying to be negative though I see how that looks. I breed Banggai's myself and know how it is to feed a dozen of them let alone 50. I know how they compete for food. I let mine separate into groups of 4 or 5 then feed those groups seperate. I filter information on these sites before I believe it. I know how much bs is spread around reef forums. When someone says they got 51 fry to reach adulthood and they are asked what are the secrets to success and they disapear w/ nothing then yeah I question the information. Then when some bloke pops in crying like a baby again w/ no evidence to back up his remarks then yeah I question him. On the other hand you did site your post so I applaud you my good man.
Reggie, well done except when you tried to make a joke about not spelling Banggai right. I think Blenny is right, there is some sarchasm about someone breeding a fish they don't know how to spell.

I def. agree with you questioning it. It was quite a claim and would also love to know the secret. There is alot of info on another breeders board and that .pdf about hufa and some other vitamins but have not had a recent hatch to try enrichment with.

Not to invoke more drama...but are you allowed to be sarcastic if you can't spell it?

I think the feather ruffling came when a new user with a post or two came in and spouted off flaming remarks. These forums are all about sharing and having fun....not coming in and creating drama. Keep the drama to your personal lives. Everyone just needs to lighten up. If we can't have a little fun...then why be here. If a spelling error is going to have a person "banned from the club" after they share their own personal experiences on their own method of breeding and spreading the info on what has, or has not worked for them....then I don't want to carry a card. This is something that my 12 year old son and I do for fun and I thought I would share a little.
