900 Gallon Reef Project

Boy, took 2 years for this thread to get to where its at... and me, 2 lunch breaks to skim through it all. Kudos... like a previous member posted, its like a novel. You take us on your journey, and through the ups and downs... we feel it too.

Keep up the good work!

Impressive build. I really love the stone tile stand. Can you elaborate on the tile and the stone trim. I must have missed the description. I would love to try something similar on my 210.

Bro! This tank is amazing and I looked into RAD to possibly do my build....they're down the street from me! lol You've inspired me to start planning my ginormous tank sooner than expected. I'm tagging along for this one for sure! You've already gave me some great ideas.

Okay its been a while since I last posted folks and I apologize. After the birth of my son, priorities in life have shifted quite a bit. Just to update everyone on the tank:

I went through 2-3 versions of Reeftech lights and am left with giant paperweights. No functioning software, no support. 2 lights sent back for repairs were never returned and the company folded because the new head of the company was essentially a con artist. I am still looking to get new LED lights on the tank and am searching for suggestions. The myriad of options currently available is great, but I am not sure what will work well for my tank. At the moment I like the Kessil 360n/w but am not going to rush into replacement lighting. 20k down the toilet will teach a pretty damn good lesson.

New rockwork is great but I still haven't finished rescaping the entire tank, having a child sure did throw a spanner in the works...

Just when I thought the tank had really taken off, it suffers a calcium reactor malfunction while I was out of town. SPS & LPS were goners, even tough buggers like catseyes and torches melted down. Shockingly clams and zoas survived, in fact the clams loved it.... I am letting things settle down a bit before starting up corals again. All of the fish are doing great. I will post up some pictures later this week.

The Tunze wave boxes are still amazing, they create a 2 inch tall wave along the entire length of the tank. I am actively considering capping my closed loop system to save on the electricity consumed by the two giant pumps.

Also if any of you in the NY/NJ/CT area have a tank this size, or know someone that does, I am looking for some help evaluating what changes I need to make to the system. Anyone have a contact or can setup an intro with the folks that run Atlantis, over on Long Island? I am tired of going through the constant cycle of crashed and rebounds, that I never encountered in 15 years of smaller systems.

I would guess that the people from Atlantis will be at the Manhattan Reefs Frag Swap on Nov 17th in Brooklyn, as well as many other local tri-state area reefers that can help /offer advice

I am really looking to have someone come in and do an evaluation that has experience with builds this size. I must have something that I am overlooking in the setup that is causing the majority of my issues.

Hey Lucas.....it's been a long time......congrats on the birth of your son and sorry about the tank issues. I am a member of the Long Island Reef Association (LIRA) and Joe Yaiullo is the President of the club and also the Marine Biologist/curator at Atlantis. Maybe you can attend a meeting at our club and ask him directly....

Thank you for the information, I will see if I can't make a meeting in the near future.
