9410 skimmer questions

I unhooked the airline from the skimmer body and opened the air all the way up. The bubbles are barely making into the neck of the cup. Im so lost with this thing. going to try soaking it in vinegar tonight

after 6 full days since the water change this skimmer hasn't pulled anything out of the water nothing. the collection cup is bone dry on the inside. Normally at this point I would have had to empty it at least once possibly twice

took the stand I made out and set the skimmer in the bottom of the sump at 10 inches in the water and turned the air back until the bubbles were right at the top of the neck. I guess this is the only way it will work

You are still welcome to send the skimmer in, I have to assume at this point that the pump is not working properly.

If you send the skimmer in, please don't send the cup and remove the pump from the body and send it wrapped in paper or bubble wrap so it does not crack the body in transit.

I am scared to death to take the skimmer completely out as nothing has skimmed in over a week and a Half. I just don't want to lose everything in the tank. I just don't know what to do. I don't have the funds to buy another pump or skimmer as much as it seems like I am going to have to.

This Is the skimmer running in 10 inches of water with the air almost completely closed.

The image didn't seem to come through.

If the skimmer is removing nothing, it is not making a difference other than oxygenating the water. For that matter just making sure all your flow pumps were in order and possibly adding an airstone would give the same result. I would not worry to much about not having it as long everything else is in order and no new livestock is added.

What I notice as odd is that the bubbles are clean white, generally their is a transition layer of yellowish bubbles which is the actual foam to be removed. The white bubbles are nothing but air. Any chance you have a friends tank you could set it up on for a day? It really looks like it is operating normally but no organics are clinging to the bubbles and forming the protein foam that needs to be removed. Another test people used to use was to add a bit of freeze dried krill, enough that a very small amount goes uneaten, just a bit of dust and particles. The chitin and cellulose content tends to really get skimmers going and can verify if it is a lack of skimmable material or the skimmer that is at fault.

I will stop and grab some freeze dried kril on the way home tomorrow. when i came home today i noticed quite a bit of very wet and light colored skimmate in the cup

couldn't find any freeze dried krill so i went with some flake food instead. Skimmer went nuts and started overfoaming so i had to put it back up on the stand i built for it. i guess my water was just too clean

I'm interested in getting this skimmer for a new 180 with fairly large 70g sump. I love the electric profile of 15w, but after reading this thread very leery of "issues".

Can I get some feedback on your experience, positive or negative.

PM would be best...

Thanks!

The issues actually weren't the skimmer it was just with the large tank I have and very low bio load there was nothing to skim. I have upped my feedings a little bit and now it pulls out some of the nastiest darkest stuff I have ever seen

Thanks for the reply...I ordered it and received it.

I think you'll be pleased with your skimmer. Did you get a foam extractor with it? Awesome accessory and lengthens time between cleaning. I travel a lot in this accessory was a must for me.

It is a separate accessory, part 9020.140. It increases the reaction chamber area and you can run the air more open and the skimmer is stronger as a result (more air, more contact time).
