PS: Sorry guys for the comment above, not related to marine aquarium.:p

Hello people, my english is not so good, but I can say some things... and I can understand you.

I liked this foruns, and I'm starting to take part...

Regards,
Carlinhos.

carlinhos, that is ok! your english does not have to be good. We have a ton of international people on this board and we understand.

can you tell us why you went with DSB again? And have you done a water change recently? Can you tell us why you feel water changes dont help or vice versa. Thanks!

By the way, you can write your responses in Brazil language and then translate with this webpage to English:

hello guys I had the oportunity to see Carlinho's reef at his house few months ago and it was just INCREDIBLE. At that time he was preparing the first water change after 1 year and half !!!!

Hi Folks,

Some of you did some question about my reef, and here we go with the answer
:

1 - Why did you do a upgrade to a new reef tank ?

I had to change my reef to a new local , and the acroporas was too large
that a need to put them in a large tank. I canÃ"šÃ‚´t clean my glass in the old
tank, there was no space between the glass and the acroporas.....

2 - Why did you change your system, from Jaubert to DSB ?

When I was setting up my new tank, the old one was still running and he was
with 3 years old. At this time in the old tank , I had a problem with
fosfate, a high level os fosfate.....I find out that my Jaubert had a
problem because was a lot of fosfate in the halimeda. When I removed all the
halimeda in the old tank, the halimeda was so dirty that I canÃ"šÃ‚´t believe
that you can have a health reef with a lot of dirty inside halimeda.....
ThatÃ"šÃ‚´s why I set up a new one with DSB.....My new tank has 2 years old and
the DSB is still clean.....

3 - Do you put any suplement in your reef ?

I keep my reef with a calcium reactor and kalkwasser...sometimes a put a
suplement ( Koralvit Combi ) , but this is not regular and I do not have a
rule....

4 - Do you feed your corals ?

I never feed my corals....at this moment IÃ"šÃ‚´m trying Phytoplan....but I
didnÃ"šÃ‚´t see any change until now

5 - Do you bought frags or a colony of your acroporas ?

Most of them was frags...a little frags...These frags became the colony that
you can see in the photos...some acroporas has 8 years old....

6 - Do you never did any water change in your new tank ? Why ?

When I was a beginner, I did regular water change in my first reef. But I
always had a problem with algae and my reef was dominate by algae. The
experts told me that I had to do a water change to solve my problem with
algae, so I did a 50% water change...but the algae still was there....

When I was thinking in give up, I didnÃ"šÃ‚´t take care about my reef for a
period....for my surprise, in 3 months with any water change my reef was
clean, the algae gone. So I think that a lot of water change can unbalance
your reef. Since this period, I didnÃ"šÃ‚´t do any water change...for 2
years....and the corals and the reef never look so good.

In my new tank , I never did any water change....and the reef has 2 years. I
Think with you have a good skimmer, strong light and calcium, your acroporas
will grow and thrive

There is no rule for me in change water....I didnÃ"šÃ‚´t do any water change
until now because I think that is not necessary right now.....but I can do
one day.....

Next month I will add a new sump to the reef, the size is 260g

Regards,
Carlinhos.

carlinhos, thanks for sharing about your system with us. You have a beautiful tank and it has inspired me, and I'm sure others also.

You stated that halimeda was causing phosphate problems in your first tank. Was the halimeda being used as a substrate for the plenum?

Carlinhos when you filled this tank for the fist time did you use water from the ocean or was it a saltmix?
The reason Iââ"šÂ¬Ã¢"žÂ¢m asking is I have bin talking with some reefers from Portugal and most of them collect water from the ocean then use a saltmix to adjust the salinity and so far they have had very good results.

carlinhos, thanks again for responding. We all love to here your experience. those answers helped a lot learning what you did.

I also have a friend who has never done a water change in about a year and a half and his tank looks fine too. Corals growing all the way to the top of the water line and water is crystal clear. He also does not believe in water changes. Im really amazed that some people have accomplished this.

When your SPS start to touch each other, do you frag them or do you let them grow into each other?

And what is the reason you are doing a water change now? and how much percent do you plan to do? thanks again!

Hi Guys,

I can answer some questions because I know Carlinhos...

Yes, Carlinhos was using halimeda as a substrate for the plenum

When he filled his tank for the first time he used water from the atlantic ocean.

Actualy Carlinhos is not doing a water change....but he will add a new sump ( 260G ) , so new water will mix with the old water....

I donÃ"šÃ‚´t know what Carlinhos does when SPS start to touch each other....I will ask to him and I will put the answer soon....

Regards

Roberto

Hi Guys,

Carlinhos told me that some acroporas can touch each other and there is no problem, but some kind of acroporas is more agressive and he frags them

And the new sump is just to raise the volume of water, because the corals are very big....and with more water, more stable is the system

Regards

Roberto

Thanks Roberto!

How much does he spend on maintaining his tank daily/weekly? Since his tank is already getting full again, does he plan to upgrade once again so the corals can grow even more?

Does any one else see what looks like a eel in carlinos moreno's tank? Is that what it is carlinos or is it a cucumber?

I would also like to know what your lighting schedule is and if you use carbon on a regular basis?

Hi Invincible,

I think he is not going to do other upgrade....there is no more space in his house :-)

I donÃ"šÃ‚´t know how many time he spends wiht his tank.....but I tkink is not too much, because almost in his tank is automatic like top off, kalkwasser, lights and so on

Jpg,

There is no eel in his tank...maybe itÃ"šÃ‚´s a cucumber or a tongue coral ( I remember that he has cucumber and tongue )

Regards

Roberto

Hi Folks,

I never used carbon in my tank

My tank gets natural light, so I donÃ"šÃ‚´t have a rule to lighting schedule,
depend from the good mood of the sun.

I spend about 15 minutes a week to clean the skimmer and clean the glass,
and about an hour a month to clean the sump.....

At this moment I donÃ"šÃ‚´t think in set up a new tank.....itÃ"šÃ‚´s very expensive

Regards
Carlinhos.

Invincible 569,

Why didn't you put the first picture of the site "The Reefs"???

I'm asking because I like this picture, this is my favorite picture, in fact. Could you put this picture here?

Regards,
Carlinhos.
