A Capital Dream - 400g SPS build

What a bummer...nice to see you are taking things well and the builder is set to make the repairs.

Without placing the blame what do feel caused the failure and any possible pics.

Can't wait to see what u do with that rock

I don't like to speculate so I will wait until the builder comes. I believe he will have better insight while I would just be guessing. To be fair to everyone involved, one way or another, my guesses or pictures would only lead to a debate on what happened, why it happened and who should be blamed.

If I were in your shoes, and probably most others reading this thread, I would want more details too. I understand. The tank will be fixed and I would like to leave it at that and move forward with the build. I will add that this fix will not cost me anything, except, maybe, food and drink while they are in my house. :)

I got some good news today. The glass is on its way from Toronto, a 5 hr drive from here. I will probably get it Wednesday, or possibly tomorrow if it is off loaded in Ottawa today.

Ward, I'm so sorry to hear this. On the plus side, you've got a great attitude.

Things that don't kill us serve to make us stronger. Hang in there.

Thanks Jerry. I guess that as I get older, the upsets in everyday life don't seem to impact me the way they use to. Everything works out at the end of the day.

I have the glass at the house and the builder is flying in on Sunday Morning.

There are two identical size pieces that will be laid side by side over the existing bottom. I am very interested to see how it is done.

More good news. I have had a standing order with my go to LFS for Pyramid butterfly fish. I really wanted a few of them, if possible. I got a call from him yesterday to confirm that I still wanted them and today I picked up three. All of them are about 3.5" long and are now in quarantine.

I fed them a little cyclops to see if they would eat. They stayed in their huddle, but grabbed any that drifted near them. I followed that up with some mysis and they ate that also. I will ensure they are eating well then will start with ttm and prazi.

Yes. Good luck on Sunday!
Great fish!
If I could find a few smaller pyramids, I'd give my single pyramid some friends.

Thanks. I was a little surprised when I saw the size of them. I expected smaller specimens. I have them in a 30g QT, but may have to set up a 55g I have laying around.

Matt,

Jardins de Mer in Chambly had some about a week and a half ago. Don't know what size.

Ward,

Nice score. Marinescape? I need to get out there tomorrow.

Good luck with the repair on Sunday.

Yes, Marinescape. They have been keeping an eye out for me. You know you have to go there; they are having a frag sale. Buy 2 get 1 free. Just watch out for all those Hell's Angels out there. [emoji1]

An FYI for our readers. There is a Hells Angels gathering this weekend in our city. It has a mandatory attendance and they expect up to 700 members to be here.

A quick update. I picked Roger (the builder of my tank) at the airport Sunday morning. He looked at the tank after we got to my place and started right on to the repair. I became a build apprentice and helped him with the work. I was impressed with both his professonalism and his personal attitude. He built the tank himself and he had a vested interested in it. I helped him with the repair and gained some insight into building a tank. It took a about 4 hours to do everything and I drove him back to the airport for his flight home.

I was asked to wait 4 days for the curing process. Today I added the sand back into the tank and will spread it out tomorrow. I will also begin adding the RODI. I guess I will know if the fix was successful in a few days, after the tank is full. I will follow up with pictures in the next couple of days.

Ward, glad to hear that the tank is repaired. Did Roger have an opinion as to the cause of the problem?

Good to hear. Hope it solves the the issue, once and for all.
You and me both. This is the first time in the build that I was getting a little antsy to get back to the build.

Roger said to wait 4 days. Now that is only 96 hours, not that long until Thursday afternoon. However, yesterday morning I started to ponder the 4 day wait. Did the 4 days mean 96 hrs or did it mean Sun, Mon, Tues and Wed. (I can include Sunday because he finished before 1:00 [emoji1] ). Lol, impatience won. I started putting the sand back in and fired up the RODI. Only 50 hours before it's full.

Thanks Jerry. Roger could not identify the cause with certainty. Most likely, something happened in transit that was not evident to me. The crating of the tank had some damage in one of the front corners, but I did not see anything wrong with the tank when fully uncrated. The fracture looked to have started on the back corner of that same side, so it may have taken some kind of damage that weakened the glass.

I am glad to be nack on track with build. The RODI has been running for 14 hours and no leak yet. :)
