Christine - hope all is well, we're here if you need anything

As for me - remember that "live vicariously through...." conversation we had? welllll, looks like i'm gonna have to put my money where my mouth is....i just hope i dont let you all down

doug swap out the modem
thats the only way to fix this your modem isnt boost capable and its trying to update its firmware so it keeps cycling causing you to have no or limited connection.

take the modem to the happauge walk in center and tell them this modem isnt working you want a new one.

get the new one home and run memberservices on the modem
https://memberservices.optonline.net/

you will need your acct number so remember the acct number always has a 0 before the 7 for example 07801 and not 7801
and the last digit on the account if its a single digit has a 0 infront unless its 10 or above.

i guess ill trade it in later - its definately recycling over and over - do yopu guys try and do the upgrades more during the day- i dont think ive ever seen it do it at night -

mine doesnt drop during those times though - seems to go in the morning, early afternoon - definately resetting as the phone cuts out too i have since learned

doug gimme your # ill look at the modem and see whats going on and ill even call you and open a ticket
you cannot swap a voice modem at the walk in center they will turn you away the phone number is coded into each modem we need a tech to go out there but maybe i can fix it from here

if thats the case then if i turn off mt desktop i should be able to get the laptop to retrieve the address then - ill give that a shot as well later

doug let me know there are tons of ways to beat the system they call cablevision unfortunately i work for them now so its even easier :-P

Dang, and I had an extra router I got rid of not too long ago. Yup, that's part of the problem. You might still need a new modem, as Keith said, especially if it keeps resetting itself and can't get and stay sync'd. But to run more than one computer off the modem at the same time, you will need a router.

I'm gonna check storage real quick and make sure I don't have an extra router...

Does Optonline need a user name and password to get an IP address? I think I had to add that in my wireless router to get it connected to the ISP. Your desktop may have a small software to do this for you and the new laptop needs the same.

nope just authenticate to your wireless network only passwords on our service are to log into the email. other than that its an open connection which is why he can use his neighbors connection for wireless thats called poor security.

but if his modem keeps recycling like that could be a signal issue or a modem issue.

they will have a true wireless feature soon tho that uses email address and password to get on the network the same as they have in philly. its being tested in port jeff and across the ferry to conn.

as far as laptops i have 6 wireless laptops in the house authentication isnt to our service or the modem for internet access its to the router directly so if thee is no connection its to the router and not our service.
