As long as it gets you enough for your bio load. I prefer an open tank and would like if mine were more open. When I upgrade to a 180 I will place the additional rock i need for the bio load in my sump or refugium rather then the display . So i will just have this rock in there, plus maybe one or two extra nice shaped large pieces.

I just ordered a Sequence Reeflo Tarpon pump to replace my Iwaki 55rlt .

After doing all the extra cleaning to sump etc.. new skimmer all the wtaer changes to bring nitrates down from 44 to 3 my nitrates have climbed back up to 8 over the last two weeks with no water changes. So with everythign I did I have not stopped nitrates from raising without good sized water changes. Water changes will be scheduled at 15g / week. But I think I will add a 5g remote deep sand bed. That will take a few months to see the benefits but I hope I see zero nitrates gain.

I added a remote deep sand bed to my sump tonight using a 5g IO salt bucket. It was very easy to set up and I am hoping it will eventually bring my nitrates to ZERO. Will check nitrates once a month from here out. It will take a few months for the sand bed to start to work.
I will take a pic of it tomorow.

I do not know if my rdsb had anything to do with it but my nitrates have dropped down to 2 . I had done so many other things to drop nitrates before adding the rdsb . Such as major cleaning of everything and upgrading my skimmer and of course major water changes to drop them. But after dropping nitrates to 4 from water changes they slowly climbed to 8,so it did not look like all the extra cleaning did the trick. Now that the rdsb is running they are down to 2. But at the time I added the rdsb the new skimmer was only in place about a week or so , and I also changed my skimmer media when I added the rdsb. So its either the new skimmer , rdsb, or calcium media change, or all three.

I truly doubt that the rdsb has anything to do with the nitrate drop. I don't think the surface area is enough to really get much benefit. I think it's all the other things that you have done.

BTW, nice tank. I hope mine is as successful.

That rdsb is a tried and tested method of dropping nitrate, it definately works, I just do not think it could do it in a 1 month time period. Anthony Calfo has a huge thread on this method of nitrate reduction.

So you have the skimmer output going into the rdsb and then it back to the sump?

How much sand did you put in the bucket?

Yes I have the skimmer output to the rdsb, then to the sump, it flows at about 180g/hr. If I remember correctly I was able to put about 30lbs of sand in it,sugar sized.
