A Reef in the Sky

The lighter growth tips shouldn't be a problem... that usually just shows that there is new growth. It's the receding base tissue that would concern me. Assuming your nutrient levels are good, I would double check to make sure the entire coral (the base included) is getting enough flow.

And Coral G looks a little bleached to me... where is it currently placed in your tank? You might want to move it down a little (unless there is another factor at play here) and acclimate this to your light set-up a bit slower than the others (which seem to be coloring up nicely).

Looking good though!!! Keep it up...
For sure, will watch out. I have moved coral G and raised the lights too.

Great shots chief :bounce3:

Looks like I'm going to have to borrow the macro!!!!!
For sure!

Coral A is a Acropora Chesterfieldensis. To make it a bit more clear when I said the corals looked slightly bleached; White tips are almost always signs of growth, like in you pictures. The bleaching is more the overall color of the colony. The Pocci for instance normally is much darker, and this also counts for the two stags.
Under good conditions; not too much light, enough Dissolved and Particulate "food" in the water column, the corals will slowly become darker in color again.

Just don't shock the corals with too much light at the moment, when they are still stressed.

Okay great... thanks for the clarification. Lights have been raised too. My main goal at the moment is stability....particularly alkalinity.

Your Prostratas looks great! Those white tips looks like growth to me. My neon green prostrata got the same look. Everything is coming along nicely Alpha! Great job!
Thanks Mav.

are any of your acros from australia? i like acros from there.
No, they are from Indonesia. Scoly's and Acans are from Australia

Maintenance Updates

Finally getting around to finishing off the odd ends.

Had a custom black acrylic cover made for the overflow. Mainly to prevent any unwanted algae.

Picked this up for my ATO. Decided not to use GHL doser.

For tidiness of dosing lines
IMG_5100.jpg

Had a custom acrylic cover made to place on top of the sump to reduce salt creep, splashing of water.
IMG_5215.jpg

Finished placing wires and units.
IMG_5212.jpg

Hung notes, schedules and lifter controller inside the door. All fits nicely.
IMG_5213.jpg

Made up a 'Which Power Plug?' card for the misses in case any equipment may need to be turned off while I'm away. Stickers were her touch :lolspin:
IMG_5214.jpg

Only major thing to finish is setting up the dosing schedule. Currently manually dosing.

Picked up x3 new coral the other day. Being more careful with the lighting position... as you will see.

Getting a better at understanding the camera. Blues are difficult to get correct in the FTS.

Thanks for looking :)

'm a late follower to this thread, very nice. One comment (I apologize if this has been mentioned in the text,as I am not reading all of the text this first time around. I have heard HORROR stories from people who use ball valves on their sump input lines. Too easy to get blocked. Just a heads up. GREAT JOB!!!!!

Flatworms on the coral?

If they are, pull that coral for quarantine and get on some flatworm exit quick before they take hold in your tank.. Also, inspect other corals that may have come from the same source. Fortunately, they look like the red planaria type, which are not harmful to your coral and can be treated with FWE unlike AEFWs. Siphon as many of the out as you can before treating.

good looking new corals!

yes you have flat worm now, you should dip all your corals before you add them into the tank or you might have some trouble one day.

Wow. What superb design and attention to detail.
> First build thread I've ever read in one sitting.

Question:
Are you able to scrape/clean coraline off your back glass with it 'painted' like that?
If so, please explain how, or how it was done if its not 'painted'.

man such a clean tank. Looks really good with no frag cluttering the sand bed. I LOVE IT!
Thank you... hopefully it will stay clean though I would like some frags.

LOL!! You know I'm very serious!!!

Flatworms on the coral?
Yes they are. Was not 100% sure but thanks to you guys I now know!

Thanks for that info FlyboySMB. I really want to change them to gate valves sometime in the future. For the mean time, I clean them once every two months by dismantling them.

Thank you Jonathon. The coral has been dipped and cleaned to my best ability. Unfortunately, no QT tank. I agree... they appear to be the planaria type. Pics shortly

Your tank looks great!
Thank you

Thank you. I have dipped all corals but unfortunately some bugs can get through. I agree, must get on top of it now.

Not my tank I was asking if he knew he had flatworms.
Thanks again.

I know.. my message was in support of yours to V1..
Lol.. thanks guys

I had that type once and the FWE took them right out and I have never had them return.
Fingers crossed that I don't get them back either.

Thank you for compliment. Glad the thread maintained your attention. I love posting pictures!
Yes, I just use the Kent Marine scraper to clean the back wall. The long handle helps to avoid my hand going into the water too. The background is blue contact and is attached to the rear of the glass so there is no problem scraping the glass. Hope that answers your question.

Defeating the RED Planaria flat worm

Thanks to you guys I've managed to take some action to defeat these pests.

When I looked at the original picture, I noticed them but it didn't really click what they were. At closer inspection of the coral this morning, they really stood out. Anyhow, corrective action has taken place to fight them. Fingers crossed.

Procedure used:

3.8L (1 gallon) of tank water
30 Drops of CoralRX Pro
Gently stirred to mix solution
Removed coral carefully and placed in container ~7mins
Stirred water and shook coral.

Noticed straight away that they were falling off. Underneath the coral I noticed that there may have been eggs (sorry no picture attached to coral) so I tried scraping it off. It came off cleanly.

Some pictures

Red circles: Red Planaria
Blue cirlce: Eggs??

An overview of what fell off just from CoralRX :eek2:
IMG_5278.jpg

I remember reading somewhere that a fresh water dip can help dis-lodge them so since there were still some in the crevasses I decided to give it a try. Immediately the remaining ones I could see fell off.

Some links I found informative
Flatworms
Identification of Convolutriloba species
flatworms and other bugs that make you see red
CoralRX Uses

The coral is now resting on the sand bed as it is pale in colour. Will leave it along for a while to monitor.

Thank you again guys for your assistance. It is all a learning experience.

Hello,

the thinks in the red Circle might be Convolutriloba retrogemma. Its not realy a Planaria better to say Turbellarien. They need Silicat to grow and survive. May be you can push down your Si with an adsorber. Other solution is this snail. Only eats red Turbellarien but dies if all worms are eaten.

by the way I Love you setup. Good Luck for the future.

Andrew I hate to be a party pooper but those look like AEFW to me, especially since you said you scraped off eggs.

Did you dip your corals before introducing them into your show tank?

I have found fresh water dips do more harm than good. The only monti cap I tried it with did not do well at all. Good luck and great tank :)
