A Reef Tank in the Desert - +/- 1,400 gallon system

2 Achilles, 2 Sohal's and 1 Clown Tang all in the same tank. I hope they all get along. Keep us posted on how they interact with each other.

When are we going to get updated pics of your tank???

I have to correct you. It will be 2 Achilles, 2 Sohals, 2 Clowns, 2 Purple, 2 Chevron, 2 Yellow, 2 Sailfin, 2 Dejardini, 2 Convict.... the list goes on and on. My youngest daughter thinks that I should give them all names.

Minus the Sohals and one Clown Tang that is also in QT, all of the Tangs are getting along splendidly, even the two new Achilles. I noticed earlier that they have started to swim around the whole tank.

UGHHHH I was gonna pull the trigger on that Mag :(

I suppose it's good to know it'll still be in Arizona!

....

I'll tell you what jmadison. Keep following along and if it ever splits, I will send it to you. That we both have part of this beautiful anemone!

Dan everything looks amazing and that is an impressive list of tangs!!!! Since today is a holiday you get a pass for getting a delivery yesterday :). One of my clients just moved to Scottsdale so I will be visiting her twice a yr and will have to make a trip down to you and see your tank in person when I'm out there.

I get a pass? Steve, I am humbled that you wouldn't think I would get my normal Friday deliveries.

Definitely let me know when you are going to be up in Scottsdale. It's about a two and a half hour drive from my house.

Todays deliveries were as follows:

The top package was a new control unit from Genesis Reef Systems for their Renew System. I received the system last week and the control unit didn't function correctly. Great customer service from Genesis!!! When I called Genesis and went through some troubleshooting with Kevin, he immediately Federal Expressed a new control unit out to me.

The second package is a new vendor for live adult brine shrimp. Carolina Biological Supply Company. They supply brine shrimp, pods, ants, butterflies, etc. to schools and research facilities. Their prices were real reasonable, the packaging great and the end product seems very, very good.

Perhaps a spaghetti worm?

Loimia sp (medusa)? Commonly referred to as spaghetti worms they are one of the most
important inhabitants of deep sand beds (DSB). They clean the top of the sand bed
with their long sweeping tentacles plus, they borrow deep into the sand bed pulling
and pushing water into and out of the deep layers where Nitrate is converted to
Nitrogen gas.

Thanks guys!

You are correct. I have a few Spaghetti Worms in my Seahorse/Refugium. I have been researching them and have been reading both good and bad things about them.

I am not real concerned about them getting into my main display tank. If they did, I suppose my Wrasses would get to them before they began to settle or populate.

WOW, SO JEALOUS of the new additions! All are beautiful! I wish I could have 10-freakin acclimation buckets going at the same time!

Thanks Chris.

It's not going to happen that much more, I am starting to get full! I have been developing some cool ideas with one of my 75 gallon QT's though... I am thinking that pretty soon I won't need two QT's of that size and perhaps I will turn one into something else. Not quite sure though...

I already have a Seahorse Tank... Perhaps turning the tank into some sort of filtration & cool invert tank??? Or perhaps I will try to breed Clowns or something of the sort??? I don't know... I want to do something fun with one of them.

I agree cold water macro tank would be a great addition! And full is that in your vocabulary? Might be time for a tank upgrade! Haha thanks for the inspiration and great ideas we all derive from your thread. Hopefully one day my system will be as great as yours, but not likely :)

Joe.

I can't wait to set this baby up. I really like the idea of automatically changing/replacing 7 - 10 gallons of saltwater daily, perhaps one gallon every two and a half hours, with water that I first make and check in my storage bin.

Hi - have you set this puppy up yet? very interested in how it is working and how difficult it is? If you post some details, it would be appreciated. this could really revolutionize water changes.

You may have already addressed this, so if you did I apologize. Where did you get those specific aquarium acclimation boxes? I like them a lot. Hoping I can find some just like it online.

Worm was correct. I built them out of egg-crate that I purchased at Lowes. It was a last minute effort. I needed to move my Achilles out of QT and the custom acclimation boxes I ordered weren't ready.

They were real easy to make. Just egg-crate and small cable ties.

Genesis Reef System - Renew Automatic Water Change

I was finally able to set up my Genesis Renew system today. I am reading right now how to do the programming, however on manual mode, it works great.

Attached are couple of pictures of where I installed the system. I attached the 1 Gallon Reservoir (metering) buckets to the frame surrounding my Quarantine Tanks. I have the buckets approximately 6' off the ground.

In a nutshell, the bucket on the left side will fill up with freshly made SW out of one my 200 gallon storage/mixing tanks. If too much water goes into the bucket, it will overflow back into the storage tank. The bucket on the right side fills up with water from my sump. Same process as with the other bucket. Too much water from the sump will overflow back into the sump. Flow into the reservoir/metering buckets are being handled by two small Eheim pumps.

When both buckets are full and any excess or overflow drained, the freshly made SW will dispense into my 90 gallon rock tank which drains into my sump. The bucket filled with the sump water will drain outside.

I have plugged the control panel into one of my EB8's on my Apex. Power to that circuit will shut off if my Floor/Flood Sensors are tripped or if my sump is running low.

My initial plan is to program the unit to perform 10 gallon water changes every 24 hours or 70 gallons per week. I will still be doing my regular weekly maintenance and will gravel vac and manually drain more each week. As I get comfortable with this system, I may increase my automatic water changes.

Hey times are tough and your buddy Leroy was willing to pass some radions to Worm and me lol. All jokes aside, looking good Dan. Its sucks none of our college teams moved forward. But that Genesis system looks cool and you can't beat a little less maintenance. How are the Sohals doing? Hope they both do well and get along. Keep those great updates coming!

Thanks Chris.

Jelly fish tank?

Breeding clowns or Bangaii Cardinals would be cool. I personally think the cardinals would be better since they are being pressured in certain areas of harvesting. Tank bred is always better.

A montipora tank sounds pretty cool, too. Maybe a color wheel of different monti caps...
