A Reef Tank in the Desert - +/- 1,400 gallon system

Hey Dan, I put in an HRV (Heat Recovery Ventilator) unit which is basically an air exchanger. In Arizona you might be better off with an ERV (Energy Recovery Ventilator) unit. Go to this site and they will tell which one is better for your area.

I put one in my fish room and it does a great job with odors, humidity and helps keep my ph up because of the constant flow of fresh air coming into the room.

I would love to join you but I'll have to.......pass on that one. Besides a hall pass isn't a hall pass unless you have some sort of posse with you.

I am not sure exactly what the smell is. The tank water doesn't smell. I am running my RO waste water through my skimmer collection cup - so that is constantly being flushed out. I have been emptying my trash in the room regularly... I just can't figure it out.

I thought that maybe it was because the room was pretty closed off or "tight". But, I have had the window in the fish room open for the last 4 weeks. I thought that it was perhaps because I keep getting the concrete floor wet. But that doesn't occur every day.

I purchased 5 large boxes of Baking Soda and have them placed throughout the room. I purchased a fan and have placed it between the skimmer and window, blowing the air outside.

This past weekend I purchased the attached room air-purifier, with a built in UV, HEPA-type, germicidal filter.

It does smell a little better, but if possible, I am looking for clean, refreshing.

Any suggestions????

These exhaust fans work very well at sending those odors outside.

I haven't started to look into cameras or camcorders yet. I need to though and will certainly keep the GoPro cameras in mind.

Maybe I missed it already, but if you haven't ... maybe you could snap an actual photo of the tank/room from the same perspective that this rendering is taken from:

I am going to have my a/c contractor look into an ERV. Quite a few members have recommended them.

Right now I have two fans stacked on top of one another at my outside window. One drawing air in and the other drawing air out.

So this is probably a dumb question but are you guys doing those HRVs / ERVs for the entire house or just your fish rooms? Whats the difference between the two of them?

I have the hrv only in my fish room and have a santa fe dehumidifier for the finished area of my basement. My wife (like just about all) is very sensitive to odors (I must be the exception to her rule...lol) so I wanted to make sure that I kept the fish room smelling as clean as possible so she would be down in there spraying air freshener. I had thought about doing the entire house but we have hot water base board heat and the AC handler units are in the attic so it would have taken a lot of work to get it done. Fortunately I have a tightly sealed house and it hasnt been an issue. The HRV unit I got cost around $500 and the guy that was doing my basement installed it for me for "free".
 
Hey Dan this is a Great Thread. just got done reading the whole thread, you have got me wanting to get my build done. i have a 400 gl DT with a 150 gl sump upgrading to a 600 gl DT and adding a 200 gl refug. will tag along for this EPIC ride.
