A Reef Tank in the Desert - +/- 1,400 gallon system

Sorry if you have answered this already,

What order did you introduce your tangs? (least aggressive -> Semi-aggressive -> aggressive?)

If I were to introduce more than one tang of the same species, is it better to introduce them in pairs? or schools?

Thanks Joe!

I have a 1,000 gallon propane tank that runs our three water heaters, ovens and furnaces. I have considered a propane generator as we use less gas in the summer months and most of our electric storms (monsoons) occur in the summer.

My wife is in favor of solar and since she has added her two cents to the topic, we'll be getting some ideas and quotes from a couple solar companies.

Any progress on alternative electricity? I have a "20kW" generator (well, it's only 17kW on natural gas, it's 20 on propane) with automatic transfer switches that'll automatically start up the generator and switch over to it within about 30 seconds (and then switch back after utility power is back for a few minutes). I suspect that 20kW might not be enough to run all your AC and the rest of your house during the summer, but I suspect it'd be enough to run the rest of your house and the fish room. There are bigger models, but maybe you won't have to go that route -- the 20kW consumes 140 ft3/hr (3.85 gal/hr) at full load (half that at half).

I suppose in Tucson you'd get a fair amount of power out of solar (and you don't have to refill the "sunlight tank"), and you said your wife was in favor of solar, but I'm curious what happened.

I was finally able to set up my Genesis Renew system today. I am reading right now how to do the programming, however on manual mode, it works great.

...

In a nutshell, the bucket on the left side will fill up with freshly made SW out of one my 200 gallon storage/mixing tanks. If too much water goes into the bucket, it will overflow back into the storage tank. The bucket on the right side fills up with water from my sump. Same process as with the other bucket. Too much water from the sump will overflow back into the sump. Flow into the reservoir/metering buckets are being handled by two small Eheim pumps.

When both buckets are full and any excess or overflow drained, the freshly made SW will dispense into my 90 gallon rock tank which drains into my sump. The bucket filled with the sump water will drain outside.

Thanks Dan, that's the most understandable description of the Genesis Renew system I've seen.

A local magazine, Tucson Lifestyle, was out at our house last week shooting a FTS and other pictures of our house and back yard. I will try to get a copy.

A bit of googling finds that this was in September Tucson Lifestyle. Nice!

I've read your entire thread over the past week and I'm incredibly impressed. Such a professional setup. Without doubt one of the best I've ever seen.

Just finished reading all the thread. Thanks for the excellent documentation.
Amazing and very unique fish collection you got there. People would simply bash the idea of multiple tangs even i larger setups but i guess you proved that with careful planing it is possible, not to mention taking it up to another level with keeping the tangs in pairs. I don't recall seeing clown tang, sohal and achiles tangs pairs all together in the same tank, even in public aquariums.

I introduced my first group, about 8 pairs, together. Most of them were of the more mild variety, Yellows, Blue Hippo, Yellow Eye Kole... I saved the more aggressive - Clown Tangs, Sohal Tangs, Achilles - towards the end.

When you go with more than one of the same species, you have to have a lot of patience. Some say to go with three. I have had success with pairs, but, I quarantined them together first in a smaller tank.

It took me a week but I finally read through the entire thread.... AMAZING!!! I'm new to RC but this build has really inspired me. I recently had to breakdown my tank to make room for my new baby. I have plans for a 300 gallon but thats far into the future. Thanks for sharing your experience with us.

Happy holidays to you too Dan!!! How are things going with the tank? It's hard to tell with the picture but it looks like there's less fish in the tank.
