A Reefaholic's 1000+ Gallon Mixed Reef System Build

If there's a toilet handy it's a much quicker way to get rid of the skimmate, and while it doesn't eliminate the odor, it certainly reduces its staying power.

Yeah that odor can linger in a sink trap for a while even after allowing the water to flow. Something that stinky belongs in a toilet :spin3:

Been a long while since I've updated. Was recently setting a fish trap for a big order of fish, had some huge projects at work and life has been busy. Here's crappy phone pic from recently showing tank when I was catching fish.

Thanks guys! Things went on cruise control a good 9-12 months due to some big projects at work and life/work balance being off kilter. Things have stabilized and focusing on the tank again.

Recent Activity:

- Did full tank cleanup about 6 weeks ago, religiously using Apex on maintenance being performed.
- Started testing strong again, alk had dipped and effluent was not keeping up with the demand. Have since straightened out and effluent is running about 30% faster. Started to notice some color loss and had one milli start fading away. Recovered my params and lost about 1/3 of that colony but things are back on the path I want.
- Need more fish in tank. Every fish I've tried adding in past 6 months gets bullied by the yellow tangs and Naso. I've caught those three fish in past week and half with fish trap in picture and preparing a list of fish I'd like to add. Hoping to order a large amount of fish in next week and half, just researching what I want to add. If you have any suggestions on tangs/triggers/wrasses/butterflies let me know!

Here's some of the fish I have and love in my tank....

Wrasses....pinpoint, crescent, flame and blue side

Anthias...tri-color

Angel...Red Sea regal

Tangs....while I have way too many I love my lavender and maculiceps.

I would stay away from butterflies as the risk of them nipping is too high.

I was considering a trio of pyramid butterflies. Some awesome recommendations Steve, working on the list this week. On the Red Sea regal, had any problems? Personality and temperament?

I know someone that had pyramids in a mixed reef and ended up having to take them out because they grew a taste for all of his corals.

The only problem I have had with the regal is that he likes to eat acans and zoas. He's fine with lobos and blastos but loves acans and zoas. He doesn't bother anyone in the tank and nobody bothers him. I was extremely fortunate with mine and that it ate pellets right out of the bag. It did take about 4-5 weeks before it would start eating frozen foods. I've had him about 6 months now and eats everything like a champ.

Glad to see you back D. Tank looks amazing.

Thanks Wayne, need to take some time and check out latest on your tank!

Good to know, scary part about that is I have about 150 head orange crush acan!

Dustin, tanks looks great! For being on cruise control for so long everything sure looks good. Keep us posted on the new fish selections.
