A Splash of Color

Woah, looking very good. I was worried things would look worse than they do but of course no way. :)

That last one above is dead on identical to my pinky acro, including the blue/white near the base.

Thanks Mark, just about everything is picking up color wise and a few things look to be growing slowly, fingers crossed.
I think it's the same thing as a lot of guys have or very similar, like a cherry blossom acro. Either way it's very pretty as is your piece mate, you don't miss it when you look at your tank i bet. ;)

Do you know what species this acro is Andrew , as I have one very similar . And looks like this.

I have no idea what it is mate, yours look the same to me but actually grown out.......... i don't grow acros as you know.......
Mine is much paler and glowy, no idea why as most of my stuff is the opposite and not at all pastel. Your colony looks beautiful btw, mine is a stub........

If I am not mistaken, don't you have a little piece of Firetruck coral. For me to give you advice is the same as me helping Albert Einstein on the Theory of Relativity. What ever you do will be great. Just make Sahin jealous! ;)

Marty

Don't go comparing me to bloody Albert Einstein Marty, he and i are not in the same league buddy............
Whilst i have a pretty decent track record with acros, all he did was get hit on the head with an apple or struck by lightning flying a kite........ anyway on this forum he's an SPS joke so think before typing next time please mate.

Kinda looks like a firetruck factory in there, and that deep purple one is super nice Andrew! Glad to see some really nice colors going on.

Thanks mate, getting there slowly.

Sorry to read about your troubles Andrew. But everything in the tank still looks pretty good. I love the firetruck and the purple frags with gold polyps. Still looks awesome despite the problems!

Thanks Joe, just a matter of keeping things ticking along with no changes i think....... a novelty for me. Both those acros are among my favorites mate. :)

I think I got an Aussie frag of this coral. Exact same structure. Pale green/yellow body with bluish tips.. kind of thought it was tenuis.. but then again whenever I don't know what a coral is, I think it's tenuis.. I also picke up a pale robins egg blue piece that has the exact same structure. I glued them next to each other..

I don't think you could take a boring pic or your tank, Andrew.
I WANT RUDOLF CHRISTMAS ACRO PORN!!
By the way, there is clear growth going on, in the piece at the top of this photo..
Andrew the liar.

Mine doesn't look like a tenuis Matt, it's much finer branched but i don't really have a clue tbh.
That bloody reddy pink thing looks like that permanently mate, those tips sit there and sparkle all day long - and don't go bloody up !

I need to drive over to Florence and get a frag then! Seriously though I probably would.

Do it..........

im with matt, we need xmas rudolf red nose moose coral!

I think i'm going to do it Kevin........ i need to get a red plastic bead before Xmas day.

Why on gods earth would you desecrate that moose? Imagine the mileage you could get out of tormenting Canadian reef keepers. Cut one of the antlers and it will end up being an ugly piece. Nice pics BTW :)

How about we just make it a Rudolph for now and then we can discuss de antlering the bloody moose at a later stage Mike. At some point i need to take a frag for Dom.......... it's gonna happen so the moose better sprout another antler soon....

Very nice! What did you get? What was the nicest 3 pieces that they collected? Thanks for posting pictures of their stuff. Us Americans don't get to see that many Aussie corals in one spot most of the time. I love maricultures but there is something about the big Aussie branches they collect that just makes me smile.

I bloody hate you have deer park so close to you Andrew . And then add insult to injury you go and get a golden ticket to acro porn at it finest. . I hope the pikachu recovers as it was a stunning acro.

Dom took a heap of top downs with his DSLR and viewing tube so i'm waiting like you to see what he got. I took a pic of my favorite to show Dom it survived the first night but i haven't taken pics of anything else yet.

This was one of the nicest by far. Pink polyps with pink, blue and yellow pigments - never had anything like it personally so it may end up like some gross SSC variant if i don't keep it smiling. It's bleachy but very healthy so i really hope i can hold the colors somewhere near what they were in the wild.

It will be epic or blah............

Well i doubt you'll like the pic above then mate lol....... :)

Oh man, that is special!!
When the Aussie shipments come in here, they are almost always completely bleached out and basically white with some subtle coloration. It requires lots of blue light to get an idea of what they will look like long term.
I thought they would be more saturated coming directly off the reef and in fact they are but still quite pale.
Is that what they look like in the wild, or does the cutting and shipping actually cause them to pale out?
That piece you just posted would be my golden ticket all by itself! If I came across that, I'd weep like a little baby!! I might be weeping a little just looking at it.
I am extremely excited to see that piece in 6 weeks, in your tank, Andrew.
And looking forward to living vicariously through you as you use up the rest of that golden ticket on other acros.
Now, just to rub salt into my wounds, (and when I say rub, I really mean grind it in with a hardened Aussie boot heel) tell me, how much does a simple, lowly quiet little piece of coral like that cost over at Deer Park?

Andrew, I've just caught up with your thread. Sorry you've had some problems, we've all been there. This hobby can be tough sometimes. You've certainly bounced back though. The latest video is amazing and your corals still have the best colors out there. You've got so many gems especially that last one and the purple gold one. I might be upgrading tanks and if I do, I will be taking a lot from this thread to my new build. Thanks for the inspiration, and Happy Holidays to you

Your right Andrew I bloody well hate that acro it makes me physically want to be sick .
Sick that I live so far away for the acro porn capital of the world. Bloody Aussies and their Great Barrier Reef . How can us poomies compete with the likes of that.

Andrew, you spin a good yarn. It was like I was at Deer Park Aquarium watching you open the golden ticket. You picked out a gorgeous coral. Hopefully your tank will continue recovering. it amazes me how raising your salt level by .003 led to all of this. I believe you, but it shows how hard SPS reef keeping is. Thanks for sharing, its always good to hear from you. By the way, whats the chances of you getting another Mandarin, or a pistol shrimp and goby?

Marty

It's the prettiest A. microclados i have ever laid eyes on Matt. That crazy pastel look is what happens when a fresh collected acro blows off the majority of zoa due to collection stresses, it's nothing like the pale condition the stuff you mentioned is in though mate. Acros in the washed out pale condition you are dealing with requires low light for a few weeks to regain some form of light protection prior to placing in a higher light permanent spot.

The pieces that arrive at Deer Park aquarium from Sustainable Reefs have been off the reef less than a week and kept in conditions that aren't far removed from the ocean. Natural sunlight and NSW makes a big difference to how well an acro holds up after collection imo and the PE within minutes of being taken out of the bag at the shop can't be ignored as a sign of tip top condition.

That's why i cut it up and placed the two bits right under the 400W radiums in high light the day after i got it - the PAR reading where they are is: ' bloody high '

There is more yellow already than when i got it so i'm confident i won't kill either piece going the super quick acclimation route ;)

Dave would charge between $45- to $60- for such a piece i think Matt.

Been following for a while, awesome tank! Have a question: what are the silver fish with black stripes on their tales?

No idea mate but i found out they grow over a foot long apparently, i asked Dave why he sold them to me and he just laughed - actually everyone in the shop had a giggle over that.
They will be coming out...............

Wow, the display of the new shipment is so colorful. I wish I lived right next to Deer Park.

I read that as ' i wish i could steal biggles acros before he got a chance to see them '.................. i bet you'd be a Thursday night acro thief regular too wouldn't ya Bernie ! :mad2:

Thanks a lot buddy, hope you and your loved ones have a great Xmas and new year AND stay safe, the world isn't the place it was when i was a kid........
A new display sounds awesome, you already know how much i love your current SPS reef so any upgrade will be eagerly followed by me and a whole lot of other acro nuts

You poms are the bloody ones who sent us here mate............... that'll teach you bastards..............

Hey Marty, i think it was because the acros were already stressed from me dropping the phos too fast that the 1.0230 raised to 1.0260 in 12 hours kinda put the boot into a lot of them. I want at least three red line cleaner shrimp and a mandarin.
I HATE any fish that spits sand Marty............... and any shrimp that's mates with them...........

Picture's like this make me welcome global warming with open arms. Great California reef, here we come! WOOOO!!! <sprays cans in the air>

/s

Might be waiting a while mate :)

Ha, ha second photo, second piece, to the right front row is now in my tank.

There were two of those mauve tipped pearl skins when i was there mate, very beautiful pieces. It can be hard to choose acros sometimes at Dave's as i'm sure you know.

That last piece is insane. In Florida a pink/yellow/blue tip like that would be getting sold by half inch pricing. They might not require a first born child as security deposit, but at least a second or third born.

Your thread is always a good read for learning and entertainment value as well. Thanks for all the info you post and for always pushing the envelope in acro science and husbandry.

Merry Christmas to you and yours, the Deer Park and Sustainable Reef guys, Dom and all your Aussie reef keeping friends.

Thanks very much for the lovely words Kev, i hope you and your loved ones have a wonderful Xmas mate

I had actually glanced at that acro 30 mins earlier but dismissed it as a pink with blue tips and as i have a lot of pinks and reds already and there were so many other treasures i had decided to ignore it. It was only when Dom handed me his camera viewing tube to look at the acros with that i realised just what was sitting in front of me the whole time - and i had golden ticket shock remember. :spin3:
I super glued it to a small piece of rock i smashed off a bigger one and then used glue and putty to stick the rock to the main rock scape. That way if you add a new frag and it doesn't like the first spot you try you won't disturb any encrusting tissue that has begun to grow, just pry the putty off and move the little rock to a new spot with new putty. ;)

The other acro i bought using my golden ticket from Dom and Georgia - cardinal in residence already. If you have tables low over the sand i promise you that these little guys are just what the doctor ordered

Can i spend a golden ticket or can i spend a golden bloody ticket ! :smokin:

The monti is crazy bright orangey pink but it's a monti so who cares right. I actually bought it because i thought it would be perfect to pop the you know what out of this acro............ what ya think Kev ?

66_zpsr6kufilw.jpg

Wow! That blue, pink, yellow combo piece is just crazy nice. You have great taste in acro's bud, hope it keeps those hues for you.

Urrrghhhh. Those acros make me sick :rolleye1: I saw the pics Dom posted on FB. Dave's place is just too awesome. You lucky bastards got easy access so many nice acros. :uzi:

I have long admired your grouping of corals for contrast and to make the colors pop. That orangey pink monti does make that acro pop. But give it three months and colors on that purpley violet piece on the left will jump out of the tank when the orangey monti is under it as well

In six months it will be under the blue and white piece on the right and do the same for it as well.

You get bonus points with those of us scoring at home, for use of montis as colorful floor mats.

In one year, you will score even more points when the monti starts encroaching on your acros and you go "Bulent BraveHeart" on it.

Thanks Scott, i won't be surprised at all if it changes color a bit as it settles in. As long as the yellow and pink stay i'll be happy, the blue can turn whatever hue it wants to as it's not the reason i bought the acro anyway.

Love your thinking with the orange monti your right it does make the one above it pop.
May have to nick that idea .

I don't like monti's much but prior to going to the shop i'd already been planning to look for an acan or something bright that could live under that very pastel acro to make it stand out even more. So that's the only reason i wasted acro cash on a monti tbh.

We are not lucky bastards mate, we were sent here by you stupid poms as punishment..........
Dave has a strict no poms policy at Deer Park btw so he'd throw you out of the shop the minute you opened your mouth anyway Sahin. Dave told me that he's noticed the acros all lose PE as soon as one of you lot starts with that annoying ' pip pip my good man ' sh$t.
I asked Christian if he allowed poms to visit the Sustainable Reefs facility and he just laughed and said ' yeah, as if '.

Thanks Kev, i go to a great deal of trouble to get my colors placed correctly and i know my fiddling annoys a lot of my mates lol. For me the end result is worth it :)
