A Splash of Color

this tank is looking packed compare to a few pages back!

I've added seven pieces in the last couple of months and moved quite a few bits around as usual, plus my acros do grow - just bloody slowly atm :)

hopefully Area 51 is open in six weeks time - I'm planning a visit !!! Ask Dom ;-)

I can't ask Dom, he's in a Vietnamese hospital being treated for monkey rabies apparently...............:reading:

Has Dom made you aware of the security clearance requirements in order to gain access to the acro cave Nils ? You can get the medical at your local doctors and have them fax it to me, a chest x ray isn't mandatory but it would show a certain measure of commitment on your behalf.........
Anyway, i think it's you who needs to be talking to Dom Nils

You can see i was able to drop the gyre a full bracket height and now the left island is getting surging backflow from the gyre. Any further than about 6" above a close acro and the flow is very minimal.
I run the gyre on 70% at 5 second interval pulse mode and have an RW-15 beside it on else mode at the lowest power. If i run the pulse for any longer than about 8 seconds it blows the sand away from the peninsula end display window five feet away. Remember my display is 32" wide and i ran it fine with just the gyre for a week but added the RW-15 to make the gyre have a big surge every time the RW-15 ramps up to 100% during its cycle on else setting. It points parallel to the gyre and simply provides a random boost to the gyre effect.
The main thing about the gyre to bare in mind is this. As soon as you add a pump that actually interferes with the effect such as blowing across the gyre flow stream, you lose the actual magic. It takes the gyre about 30 seconds running before it settles into the full flow effect. If you block the build up of pulses with a single cross blow from another pump the process has to start all over - and it never will because you have other pumps repeatedly interfering.
This is what i was doing when i first tried adding the gyre and i wasn't seeing the 'magic flow' talked about. It wasn't until i saw Ryan say he was only using the gyre for flow on his peninsula that the penny dropped and i turned all the other pumps off for the first time. I've seen quite a few guys on here running more pumps than they need to in conjunction with their gyres just as i was doing so please dont get offended if you are.
I'm just bringing it up because i think a lot of reefers haven't realised they can do what Ryan and i are doing - you just gotta have faith..........

Proof is in the pic so if you like your flow now go ahead and run what ever you want :) If you would like less pumps and more delicate growth on your acros then i'd urge you to experiment as you'll be pleasantly surprised. It lets you have a shallow sand bed no probs btw and Flo is pushing hard to make sand a requirement for CCC membership......... up to you guys :smokin:

My new sump is almost ready - 1650 x 600 x 350mm - 800mm frag section lit with 8x24W T5's. Water in bottom left then twin socks - skimmer - frags - 2 x matrix media chambers - twin socks - return.

Haha sorry bro, it is a very mild dose from what I can tell. I have seen no lightening or pastel colors but I would attribute it to the amount of food I feed. Guessing that would offset that effect to some extent?

Nope, if it's got copper i don't trust it after the trace hard affair. :)

From what i have seen you should think of copper as giving you 'cleaner' more defined colors. Colors will look brighter and more richer/saturated IF you have the colors to begin with. Copper is something to use when you have everything going tickety boo color wise and want to tweak your overall display look imo. When you remove a lot of zoa from your corals you need to ensure you replace this energy provider with nutrition the corals can gather by themselves. I bet you have the best day time PE you've ever had overall since seeing your acros colors unmasked more.

Just look at Perry and Matt's latest top downs to see that you don't have to pastel your acros out with ULN conditions to have breath taking colors. If you run AF and have lots of fish and feed them lots of meaty fatty foods like mysis AND manage your water to keep nitrates and phos under control at low levels i reckon you will see the crazy turn around in colors both Matt and Perry have. Neither of their displays looks at all zeo pastel to me.

So yep i would not recommend using copper if you are not running a 'rich' system with a high nutrient in/out turnover capability - hence why we are all running matrix and siporax and good skimmers - it really is a very simple and extremely rewarding way to keep acros. :)

crazy cool vid bud and i really like the frag fence you build at the bottom:)

Thanks Mike :)

I counted the pieces/frags on the bottom today after cutting up those four new pieces - seventy one acros and only about 15 can be blamed on Dom........ i don't know where they have come from but they're bloody there, i counted them twice because i couldn't believe it lol.

I need my new sump so i can put sand back in and have nothing on the display bottom that doesn't belong.

please do that,i hate it too seeing things that don't belong in the main display...frag racks etc...oh and dom frags:p

71????:eek2::eek2::eek2:
You were a break and enter target for me before....you just went up to #1 place:thumbsup:

Well said! I have seen a lot of people using zeolites and copper with low nutrient systems with not much nutrient turnover and they would pale corals very easily with copper. This is a first for me with using this type of system though, it should be fun.

Also I think my wife uses a fish food supplement that contains fatty acids and omegas, I will check with I get home. We dose them straight in the tank sometimes when feeding at night for corals, which has not been often recently though.

Your tank is looking really great! I would love to see some close macro shots :)

Dom has asked me to transfer $1800 to a Western Union store in Vietnam ...something to do with a baboon heart transplant that he urgently requires.
As a gesture of my commitment to helping him recover, (and access to Area 51) there was not even a moments hesitation. After I hit the send button I was left pondering my thoughts thinking maybe this is just a scam.

I made it out safely, the monkey rabies has actually given me super powers. The ability to sweat profusely in humid environments

I should probably run him down on the acro-protocols for Defconn 5 access to the lair! (I don't think he knows about the cavity search that's required upon entrance...) :eek1:

The transfer was passed by the local WU store and the transplant was a success and I'm all good
Any new corals or equipment you see when you're down here are totally coincidental and I don't have any cash :uhoh3: I'll look after you now though, think of it as accommodat... I mean payback for the transplant help :lolspin:

You can steal frags anytime Mike :)

Pretty sure Dom will be adding some expensive new equipment to the tank build thanks to you Nils.........

As you can see by your green and purple spider acro your stuff is struggling to cope in my system Dom............

Finally caught up on all the new updates Andrew, sorry to hear about the fish. Wrasse story was pretty funny though as were the exchanges with your fish guy about the acros. Glad to see some good looking acro shots again! The new sump design looks wonderful can't wait to see it in action. One thing my tank still lacks in a nice millepora. Maybe one day... LFS owner said he got a shipment of aussie SPS in Friday, might have to go check them out today!
