I know most of yall will say that no tang should be put in anything less than a 5ft tank. I concure with the majority of tangs but there are a select few that stay small enough and my tank allows for alot of swimming room through caves and open water.

I was looking at the following:

Lavender Tang
Tomini Tang
Convict Tang
Thompsons Tang
White Bar Surgeonfish
Powder Brown/Gold Rim Tang

i think you will be better with your last 2 choices
powder brown or gold rim
plus both are very beautifull fish

Would it need to be introduced last due to aggression or before that due to susceptibility to desease from stress.

Lavender Tang- gets VERY large (I think like 2' long) and im pretty sure they're a naso subspecies

Tomini Tang- good choice. small, good algae eater, not overly aggressive

Convict Tang- not too aggressive, especially for an acanthurus species, but I wouldnt feel comfortable with one in a 55g. even the 3-4" ones Ive seen were pretty active swimmers

Thompsons Tang- dont know much about them, but judging by the fact they're an acanthurus species I'd guess they get big and are mildly aggressive

White Bar Surgeonfish and Powder Brown/Gold Rim Tang- two more acanthurus species, they might not get very large, but they're known for developing aggression problems and getting very large.

I'd stick to britsletooth species like the tomini, you cuold also look into the chevron and koles.

I'd never feel comfortable with the acanthurus species or the lavender in a 12" wide tank, no matter the length of it.

The Lavender tang gets to a mx of 10" in the wild so smaller in aquariums. Also its not a 55gallon tank. Its a 120gallon tank.

i would put it last
sometimes if they are long time in a tank they
try to be bad so they can show who is the boss to new fish

I just added a mimic tang to my 125...they stay fairly small, and are a great looking tang. I got a chocolate mimic so I get to watch it grow and change from a bright yellow to a whitish, brownish sort of look.
