abyssal anemone...who knew?

Some incredible creatures found in the abyss, and a surprising (to people that don't study these things) number of them. Poorly understood at best, but some interesting work being done. One of our PhD student's just defended, her work was all about trying to get handle on where the food inputs come from in the Gulf of Mexico abyss.

Some of the coolest animals are found in the abyss and we're discovering them all the time. I hope our actions of polluting the planet and the oceans don't drive them all to extinction.
In our own small way I believe we're raising awareness about the beautiful creatures found in the oceans.

I work in the offshore oil and gas industry, one of the coolest things about that is seeing videos of what ROVs in the industry spot at crazy depths (up to say 9,000 or 10,000) feet. Not all of them are publicly available but if you want to get an idea check out SERPENT which is a program where O&G ROVs are used to have a look at deepwater life. There is some crazy stuff out there. https://www.youtube.com/user/serpentproject
