Achilles Tang Primer

in your experience.... which specimens have proven best, small/medium/large?
I have the opportunity to order directly from a distributor and will not see the fish before I get it

i just read the entire thread! whew!

i have a 4ft x 2ft x ft tank which is about 120 gallons with a 50 gallon sump and is that really too small for an achilles? i was really hoping to get one if space allows!

I have mine in a 48x24x30 150g with lots of flow and he does fine. I will say though that mine is still fairly small (4.5 inches or so) and I will be upgrading to a bigger tank before he outgrows the one I have.

What kind of frozen are you trying? Mine will eat Mysis and veggies like they're going out of style, but will not touch flake, or pellet yet.

Will yours eat live brine? If so, you can try what I did. Give him live brine for a few days straight and then start to add some small mysis to your feedings. After I got him to eat the small mysis for two weeks, I switched him to PE Mysis which is much larger but very nutritious. My fish go crazy for it.

I am in the same boat as you, I have had my Achilles for months and all it will eat is nori. The only flake it will touch is SeaVeggies Mixed Flakes which is still tore up nori. It wont touch any frozen. I think I will try the Live Brine idea. Ranger- did you hatch the live brine yourself?

No, I just bought some at my LFS. I think was only a couple bucks.

Been reading through this thread. I had my LFS order one in for me so hoping to get it in a week or two. Achilles are my favorite tang and I'm hoping to have as much success as most on here seem to.

Here's my pick of Rowdy.

Figured it was time to add him to the list. I aquired Rowdy from Petco about 1year ago. He was maybe 2.5" to 3" then. The hardest part was getting him to eat, so I thought. Luckily I had alot of red turf algae growing at the time and he was secretly eating it for awhile before I noticed. I knew that wouldn't last forever so I tried several different kinds of nori and seaweeds until I finally came across the red seaweed algae by TLF's. He went nuts over that stuff. Eventually we switched him over to green nori sheets. At about two months he tried the mysis shrimp we had been feeding the rest of the tank. Well, he started eating that and eventually took to omega one w/garlic flakes as well as spectrum thera A pellets. Awesome fish! He'll even consume small bubble algae. Every now and then I'll pull some frags out of the frag tank and let him clean the bubble algae off them.

Hi I have mine eating nori, but cannot get him to eat frozen. Tried brine and mysis. I did try some live food, admitting only once but he didnt touch.

Any other tips to try and get him feeding on something else but Nori?

Anyone tried freezing some frozen food onto the Nori so he eat the Brine shrimp at the same time as the Nori.

This is my Achilles'. He lives in my tank was only 8 months. He began to eat the next day.

We have a person locally that blends foods and sells them. I'm not sure what all she puts in there. I do know it contains nori, mysis, clam, cyclopeze. There are a few other things in there as well. But either way, there is nori blended in. If you have a food processor, you may want to try it. Just don't overblend them.

My Achilles was the exact same way. He would only eat Nori and also Nori Flakes from Julian Sprungs. However, eventually he started to go nuts over frozen Ocean Nutrition Formula 2. I was excited because that has a lot more ingredients in it and it soaks up garlic, selcon, vita-chem etc very well. So my advice would be try Frozen Formula 2. If he doesn't eat it right away trying soaking it, if he still doesn't eat it try it again once every week or so.

Still have mine. Eats any thing I put in the tank. Finally got it's full tear drop. No worries here.
