Achilles Tang Primer

Wow, haven't visited this thread for a while - some wacky advice masquerading as expertise. Achilles is a swimmer and needs both space and flow. Relying on any part of the ornamental fish supply chain for any kind of effective quarantine is folly. Juveniles often have an in distinct or less full colored 'teardrop'. Nori important, but meaty foods also required.

I have had mine now for four years. Though it is on the smaller side at about 5", it's in full adult colors. Eats nori, pellets, brine and the larger PE mysis. It's holding a healthy body weight. My tank also has ich and the AT is now mostly immune. Probably the most aggressive of all my tangs to newcomers despite not being the largest.

So my friend is breaking down his tank and offered me to house his two smaller Achilles. I have my own that's larger than his. My tank is 300g.

The current inhabitants are Achilles, pow blue, naso, chevron, purple and yellow. His are Achilles x2, pow blue, pow brown, naso, chevron, purple x2, yellow.
I realize it sounds nuts but I saw a friends tank which had a TON of fish that were aggressive and others that were not so and there wasn't any damage on them due to "lack of territories". He did have a large filtration system that handles these fish.

So is it possible or 6 likeshaped fish are a death sentence ?

Thats great to hear

you have any pic or video of all 6 swimming together?

My Achilies is almost 1 year in my tank, and I am thinking of trying another one if possible

People have this first the less Hardy rating cause the price you pay for it. If it cost Yellow/Brown Tang Prices, this column would be way shorter...

Yes like powders brown, blue does get ich, but unless not eatting...like a teenager getting zit outbreak, yes sucks, yes not wanted but no not the killer, Someone maybe stressing out.

General consensus is that Acanthurus tangs, especially achilles, are 'less hardy' than the other fish that we keep in this hobby.
It absolutely blows my mind that you say that ich is not a bad thing to have. Ich is usually fatal if left untreated. Sure, there are worse diseases/parasites out there but ich is still a concern.
Do some research, you seem to be a 'parrot' to what you have heard at/around your LFS.

So a small update. I got two Achilles from a buddy who broke his tank down. They aren't large, perhaps 4 inches. They are eating but not pigging out. To avoid destruction I caught my AT Friday night and moved him into the sump as he is 1.5 times their size and much fatter.
I will have him hang out in the sump for a few days (maybe 3 days or so) and then move him back into the DT. Hoping they can coexist.

Hi guys,

Planning to get an Achilles Tang in the next few months and have been doing some research. One thing that worries me is that I only have a 20-gallon QT. I was planning to have it acclimated by a 1 hour drip acclimation followed by a 1 hour paraguard treatment. Question is, would it be too stressful for the fisth? And is the QT too small? Because if it is, I won't force my way to get one. Thanks.

20 gal is probably too small. I used a 30L to QT my Achilles. BTW, if you use a QT, match salinity to incoming bag and no drip is necessary.

had 2 in qt and now they are in my main tank, here are few pics.

Very nice. Never been brave enough to try two in one tank. Generally I only keep one Acanthurus genus at a time. Is that tank 8'?
