For those of you that washed your rocks in muriatic acid and then put them in your garage to dry, did your's smell like the ocean afterwards? Mine do.
Did i do something wrong or is this normal?
I put these dry rocks in a wheelbarrow lined with pond liner,
  • Filled it with water (~30 gallons)
  • Dropped in a powerhead
  • Added 1 gallon muriatic acid
  • 30 minutes later, added 1 more gallon MA
  • 30 minutes later, added a whole lot of baking soda, to neutralize the acid
  • Rinsed each rock in RODI water
  • Laid them down in my garage

Yeah your taking the outer layer of the rock off exposing underlying layers. The rock was in the ocean at one point and you took off the layer that built up while it was underground.

I would still let the rock sit in some saltwater and test the phosphate after a few days. Phosphate can get deep inside the rock and removing phosphate from rock in your DT is a pain and expensive.
