AGA92 Corner Reef Tank Build

The skimmer pump is toast, couldn't figure out how to take it apart without breaking it open so I just chucked it.

For the meantime, the Skimmer is running on a Mag-Drive 700 that we use for water changes until the Mag-Drive 950 comes in. The place that offers overnight shipping is out of stock so I'm getting it from the other online store I shop at. Should be here later this week.

Also ordering replacement impellers for the 950 and the 1200 since I just read that they recommend that you soak the impellers in vinegar for at least 8 hours every 6 months.

Just got home to find a notice from the power company stating that our power will be periodically interrupted between 10 AM and 1 PM tomorrow.

I won't have time to go out and get a UPS tonight to run at least one of the Koralia 4's and the 250w Heater.

What are the chances that our livestock will be adversely affected?

Been busy for a while so haven't been visiting RC much lately...I've probably missed a lot on all my subscribed threads so hopefully everyone's tanks have been doing well.

For our tank we hate the fact that the algae is everywhere but don't have time to deal with it. Maybe in a couple of weeks when things settle down a bit we'll be able to get things back in order. We've been doing the minimum amount of maintenance on the tank and the algae doesn't seem to be getting any worse and maybe a little bit better, but still unsightly.

We had a (near) disaster while we were on holidays. A storm passing through must have tripped the GFCI but didn't take out the power in the apartment (clocks weren't blinking). Kara's sister was looking after the tank and coming after work and discovered that the temperature was 72. The cleaner shrimp was dead and everything else looked pretty stressed.

A friend of ours came over and helped get everything back up and running but left the light of to minimize the stress. The temperature slowly climbed back up to 79 and so far we've only lost the Royal Gramma and one of the emerald crabs. Everything else appears to be doing fine, the anemone still isn't 100% but it seems to be hanging in there.

All of the clown fish eggs that were laid before we left for vacation are gone, but that was the 4th batch of eggs they've laid since we got them so it probably won't be long until there is another batch.

i have been wondering what you have been up to. that sucks about the temp dropping but i am glad everything else is doing fine now. i hope you find out why your system is growing all that algae cus it sucks looking at it been there. your fuge is growing cheato correct?

Temperature and no flow (powerheads were off to) so no oxygen...yup, it could have been a lot worse. Might have to invest in some UPSes and/or a controller to notify us when things happen.

I think it was a sudden bioload increase that caused the bloom and now it's just not going away (very fast). The skimmer is producing tons of skimmate, we are dosing 0.3 ml of vodka daily even though the test kits show negligible results for nitrate and phosphate, and the chaeto continues to grow at a pretty fast rate.

We're going to remove the rocks we can and scrub them down, start using filter socks, and do some aggressive water changes when we're able to spend the time on the tank. The title for the end of summer updates will be "Four weddings and a Porcelain Funeral". :D

The case of the suicidal anemone...

The case of the suicidal anemone...

A few weeks back we took out all the rocks and scrubbed them of the Green Hair Algae and/or Bubble Algae that had grown on them since the last time we did that. (Following Capn's aka Scott methodology)

We made sure to not disturb the rock where the Green Bubble Tip Anemone had been for a long while, however, a day or two later it started to move.

For the first while it was in the very back top corner of the tank but looked healthy.

Then yesterday I found it being sucked into one of the Maxi Jet 1200's that are on the wave maker so I unplugged it and it was moving across the back of the tank and appeared to be in a semi-safe if not poorly visable position before the lights went off last night. It didn't look too bad but it has done this before and recovered okay.

This morning the lights came on and I noticed it was being sucked into one of the Koralia 4s. I've unplugged that powerhead and am contemplating unplugging all but the one Koralia 4 on the opposite side of the tank until it finds a good position, but I'm afraid that if it does, it may move again when I turn everything back on.

Any ideas?

We're also expecting some zoa frags today and sixty or so snails, a couple of emerald crabs, an urchin, and a bunch of shrimp (cleaner and peppermint) to refresh the CUC, so I will likely post another update in a day or two.

i would leave any powerheads off near it untill it finds a spot it likes.
what does your CUC look like these days? and what kind of urchin are you getting?

That's what I'm doing just contemplating the others. :)

We lost the Cleaner Shrimp and surviving Emerald Crab during the power outage so all we have are a few Astreas, a handful of Margaritas, a few Nassarius, and a ton of Ceriths (they are reproducing like crazy).

We ordered 20 each of the Astreas, Margaritas, and Nassarius snails, two Cleaner Shrimps, three Peppermint Shrimps (one for the 10G), three Emerald Crabs (again one for the 10G), and a Blue Tuxedo Urchin.

We also ordered another Blue Spotted Watchman Goby to replace the one that ate himself to death (piece of silverside expelled by the anemone).

cool, i hope to see them make an impact on your tank. since your getting an urchin(mine knocks everything down) if you can find a couple of turbos it wouldnt hurt either. The margaritas like cooler water just to let you know.

Where did you decide to order from?

Where did you decide to order from?
CUC and Fish from J&L Aquatics
Zoa Frags from Fragalot.ca

Just waiting for the light to come on to do a full inspection but so far everything looks okay this morning.

One of the cleaner shrimp we ordered wasn't very active when I was drip acclimating it so we kept an eye on it for a while longer after putting everything else in the tank. Unfortunately, the next time we looked at it (about 15-30 minutes later) it was on it's side and not moving at all. I called J&L and they are crediting us for the shrimp; we had to send them a picture of the corpse.

Two of the Mithrax Crabs were red and one was green...from the quick search I did yesterday when I noticed that they weren't the same, the red ones may be better than the green ones.

I'll keep you posted. :)

yeah i have lost a couple of cleaner shimp due to acclimation, any inverts are dripped for atleast 2 hours now.

Drip acclimation over 2 hours is all we do for anything...

sometimes they are just doomed no mater what you do, i tried saving an anthias from a LFS a couple of weeks ago, he never acclimated well and lost him a day later.

J&L has was good when I had to get a credit from them from my livestock I ordered. Even though I didn't redeem my credit for over a year after it wasn't a problem at all.

You had to send a pic of the shrimp? They never asked for pics from me but then again my order was delayed by Air Canada for 3 days so I imagain they knew there was goan be some DOA's in my order.

Yes, they've always been good to deal with.

Yup, that's what they asked for...thankfully we haven't had that much of a delay on any orders.

Even with the lights out one of our tank citizens let the new Powder Brown Tang know that they are boss and nipped it's tail. We're leaving the lights out for another 24 hours so that everyone can figure out how to live with the new addition.

However, we're wondering how long it will take for that chunk to grow back?

We're hoping fins are like fingernails and that it won't take too long.

The four Blue Chromis we added seem to be doing fine but spend most of the time hiding in the rocks.

Thanks,
Chris

P.S. We think it was either the Blue Spotted Watchmen Goby or one of the two Tomato Clowns. Can't see the Mandarin or the Foxface doing it...but you never know.

Why everyone should filter their water

Why everyone should filter their water

We use our Spectrapure MAXCAP 90 RO/DI system for all water for our aquariums. We have it setup to run just RO for drinking water. We live in an apartment that is serviced by the city's water supply.

On the left are two 1 micron absolute filters and on the are two 0.2 micron Spectrapure ZetaZorb filters. Can you tell which are used and which are new?

Here is a few of the 1 micron filters from the top:

Can you see why we don't drink the water from the tap? :)
