Algae Scrubber Advanced

My CFL / LED grow light comparison so far:

Both grow great grean algae
The CFL side kicks butt,
but, the LED side also grows well and seems to be a thicker-more even matt of algae.

After a month of using both on already broken in and growing screens, they are so close, one is not clearly better than the other

I didn't get much help when I posted my own thread so maybe I shoulda asked my questions in this thread :p my fault.

Quick version:
-My AIO 10 gallon's nitrate cycle leveled off at 20ppm nitrates. I want to use an algae scrubber to lower them.
-I have a 160gph pump and I'm getting good water movement across the slanted, submerged screen. Almost no water, if any, falls thru the screen on the way down. My linked video kinda shows the bubbles that are being thrown down the screen in the overflow section.
-All of my LEDs (3W each, 700mA driver, 3-660, 1-440) have been relocated to a tight grouping (not like the picture shows) in order to provide the screen with as much light as possible. Top part of screen is 4" away from LEDs.
-I'm going for a "1-cube" (or smaller) surface area. My LED coverage is at least 4X6. Lights are on 18 hours, off 6 hours. Screen is super roughed up.

Is this a viable course of action? If I need to, how many more 660 LEDs should I add, being that it's submerged? I just bought a breeding pair of designer clowns and I'm keeping them at the LFS before I bring them home. I want 0ppm nitrates.

If this doesn't work, I'll figure out a way to lower the water level in the overflow section and jimmy-rig a real waterfall (not submerged) so that the water falls straight down. I'd really like to avoid that, though.

A quick video on the flow:

You can kinda see the bubbles being pushed down the length of the screen.

Thank you in advance for any help I may receive! I'm very open to constructive criticism.

Unfortunately it is not going to work the way it is now. The screen must have a thin air/water turbulent interface on all parts, and this requires a waterfall or upflow. The only area possibly getting that now is the part above the water, and may 1/2 deep into the water. But the lights are not shining there.

So make the screen straight-down (or use strings instead), and decide to lower the water for a waterfall or put air bubbles for an upflow. And point the lights to the middle.

Okay I'll try and make a waterfall version :(. Is my lighting sufficient once the water is lowered?

Ah yes much better. The eggcrate might clog up, but let's see how it goes. The current LEDs should be good for now.

Sweet! I just bought a few magnets from home depot that I plan on sealing with resin to make them aquarium safe. I'll use those once I've figured out how to do that. Thanks so much!

when to change out a refugium

when to change out a refugium

my refugium has been running two years.hair algae has taken over it. All other algae is gone"¦.Why did this happen and is this ok

If you mean that your refugium is full of algae, but your tank has no algae, then yes it is fine. This is what you want; lots of algae in the right place, to do all the filtering and a lot of the feeding.

i have a 125 gallon that gets fed 3 cubes per day plus seaweed sheets. i have about 100lbs of live rock that is algae free. thinking of running either a single santa monica surf 4 or two surf 2 units. any input of which setup would be better ?

ATS are getting popular! I have read tons but never taken the time to build one. Are that that effective? How much maintenance / worry is it to clean it?

Why add something you don't need? You have no algae, right?

starting to get some hair algae on the glass. i have a moorish idol and a regal angel that eat alot so my phosphates and nitrates are higher than a small bio load reef. i would like to get it under control before it gets out of control.

If the space is available, then two smaller scrubbers is always better than one bigger one. Clean one, and the other one continues to filter.

The idea is to always keep a large amount of algae photosynthesizing at all times.

They're great. No more hassle than any other tool - skimmers, socks, chaeto.. Maybe even less work.

Currently I'm using GFO and it's working well. No alage or issues in the tank. Is it with doing both or is the ATS a more natural replacement for GFO?
