Algae Scrubber Basics

I took down my CFL's and cleaned the screen today. I put togeather this LED fixture, hopefully it can grow some GHA

Thanks, as you can see its not perfect. I have a whole 2 hours into it, lol. I didn't get fussy with measuring anything and I used scrap aluminum from the DT build. That's why everything doesn't square/line up. I'm pushing that little MW 37 watts. I can't believe it fired all of those LEDs. The small fan keeps everything cool to the touch and without it, I ran it for 2 hours and it was only warm. I'll finish skinning and riveting it togeather after the trial run.

Hmmm...over-driving the driver...I wonder if that is an issue?

I'm not sure if you can, they are over current and over voltage protected. I think/hope they just under rate them. All LEDs and driver stay cool to the touch. I'll watch it for a few weeks until the trial run is over to make sure it doesn't get to hot.

I actually have neomersis growing on mine.
That doesn't surprise me.

What is concerning is where the neomersis came from.

Had a power head slip from the glass over night. Knocked over rock and sent half the sand bed into the water column... I could see loads of "mum" that had settled on the other side of the tank. The sand bed had never been disturbed... Luckily I switched to a reverse photo period a few months back... Let's see how the scrubber only system handles this...

Oh, crap!

Yeah at 5:30 this morning I was walking by the tank... some words came to mind that I cant say I this forum but sand was everywhere. Half the bottom was bare and the arch had fallen over. Fixed it the best I could, some corals got crushed. All fish seemed fine health wise, just a little freaked out... Oddly the sea fan couldn't seem happier same with the blue digi and green monti all open... So I don't think

My frogspawn of course under a rock and 5 inches of sand...

As I walked out this morning for work, I looked at the tank and it looked like a storm rolled through. I dont think I will have any issues, just some rocks and glass to clean off when I get home. I skipped feeding the tank this morning.

Green Green Green

Green Green Green

I've had my new DIY 37 watt LED lights running for 2 days @ 12hrs/day. I have more green algae growth on the screen than I did running 80watts of cfl 18 hrs/day for 7 days. I'll give it another week or so and I'll place the order to finish the build. Thank you to everyone who has helped me along the way and to everyone who has contributed to this thread. I believe the ATS will let me take my tank to the next level, I've already seen the DT algae start to go away. The plastic wrap is another great idea to even the flow on the screen. I made it 1" longer and it controls all the splashing on the fixture.

No issues to note with the tank... Just need to clean the glass... Fish and corals seem to not care at all, not showing any signs of stress... Didn't get a chance to test but I will do that tonight during maintenance.

I did feed the tank this morning.

I've been taking a lot of pictures along the way. When I get the DT lights ramped up to where they were I'll post them. That way we can compare apples to apples. Right now I have the whites at 25% and the blue at 100%. I'm hopeful in the next few months or so my water quality will improve to the point I can start adding sps.

So, I've decided to put a 20 gallon high aquarium in my son's room "for my son." ;-) I want the tank to be as simple as possible yet still effective and keep sps and a clam. Is it reasonable for the scrubber to be the only means of filtration other than live rock? I've read/studied both the traditional waterfall type ATS and the Upflow Version. If I was starting from scratch tomorrow on this tank, which one would you suggest I make?
