maybe an interesting note, but theres an RC member who used marco rock and 'seeded' it with coraline algae by taking a toothbrush and scubbing a rock that already was well encrusted with corraline and then rubbing that same brush on all his marco rocks.

he posted pictures and had complete 100% coraline coverage within 2 months. I have no idea why everybody hasn't tried this but I'm definitely going to.

"Not sure if conditions in curing would favor coraline growth...?"
That would be my concern too, but it cant hurt to try! However limewater may be easier than a reactor. You'd also be able to add a known amount and then test for calcium/alk. If it drops then you know theres a calcium demand.

Yeah, I used limewater for years as my tanks have never passed the 45G mark. My preference for corals has always been soft though I've had to take care of many SPS corals (curing them anything from red bugs to planaria) for friends. My corals luckily thrive very well with just limewater, and since I just finished my reactor but am not going to be using it on the tank until the rocks are done, might as well try to build up some purple on them :D

Oddly enough this will be a first time for me, curing the rocks. I've always been inpatient with new set ups but this is the first time that I'm doing everything to full detail... I must be getting old ;)

Electrobes, what are you talking about with the limewater? I've never heard of that.

Limewater, also known as Kalkwasser or Calcium Hydroxide. A lot of reefers instead of just using RO/DI to refill their evaporated water will use Kalkwasser+ water = Limewater.

Oh...yeah, that would be me. Haha! I do that, I just haven't heard it called that. I guess you learn something new every day ...or five things about reefing.

rpeeples - I was thinking of taking the rock I plan on buying from you and doing the same as you (Keeping them in vats for a while with actinic lighting). Do you think I should do the same with the sand or just place that in the aquarium while the rocks are curing?

Also while the rocks are curing in the vats... do you think I should keep the Kalk Reactor with it (If I use actinic lighting)? Not sure if conditions in curing would favor coraline growth...?

And with a segway... I built my Kalk Reactor today and took pictures of the process. I used "DJ-denitrator's" ;) sulfer denitrator design and just simplified it into a Kalk Reactor. I was going to make mine out of acrylic but my Dad's shop in S. Florida is busy and they kept forgetting to order my acrylic tubing :P

I should be getting my orders sometime this week... major order from Marine Depot, Hellolights (extra VHO's), and my RO/DI unit. I am going to start a Build Thread soon and will post a link here with a picture of my completed set up. Really looking forward to it as right after all that I'll pick up my rock and sand and really make the wife groan with the vat rock curing in the room! :D

I don't think a Kalk Reactor is necessary as long as it's in saltwater. Ryan actually posted an interesting twist on the macro rock and sounds like it would be a better way to seed rock and cut down on cycle time. It will be interesting to see the results of this and I probably would have tried this as well if I wasn't so impatient and did more research.

As long as you have the rock in Saltwater I would think this would have sufficient calcium concentrations to support the rock curing process.

As far as the sand if you can mix it with some established sand you will probably be better off then just the new sand alone.

Looking forward to the build thread and you should post some pics of the kalk reactor :)

If there is one thing I learned in this hobby it's that what works for one may not work for another.

That sounds like a good idea and I agree....if the calcium levels drop..I would dose a two part solution of Calc/Alk to maintain balanced levels.

Rpeeples

I wanted to take time to Thank rpeeples [Ron] for the frags he so kindly gave to me to night. I'm sure Ron has posted some pic's of his tank but I can't imagine them doing any justise to seeing it live. It by far is one of the nicest tanks I've ever seen. He has been kind enough to offer some frags from his tank for free and you don't know what your missing. Again Thank You Ron I hope you'll stop by and let me return the kindness. Dave E

You known prior to your post that this deal was coming I would have seriously considered buying your set up versus re-setting up my 40Br. Anyone in the area looking to upgrade should really jump at this!

heres my dumb question of the day? why are some tanks referred to as breeders even when theyre used as reef tanks? is it just the size standard?

Yep it's a size thing... Breeders are typically shorter but have more depth than their regular countrparts.
