Always be cautious........

Before I tell this story I want everyone to know I'm a big supporter of LFS. It has been almost 3 weeks since this happened as well so I have had a lot of time to think about it. With all of this being said I think everyone should be aware so that something like this doesn't happen to them. A couple of weeks ago I went to the LFS, that I used to go to 3-5 times a week, to pick up some saltwater for a water change. When I got there I realized I forgot my jugs that I always use. The store said don't worry we sell jugs here that you can buy. I picked one up and asked where they came from and I was informed that they were food grade and had been cleaned so they were good to go. I took the water home and did a 5g water change. About 1 hour later a buddy of mine stopped by to see the tank and when we walked over he noticed I had 3 acros that were starting to RTN. Of course I freaked out right away and started testing everything. I have Red Sea and Salifert kits for pretty much anything you can test for. All of the test came back right were they should be with no swings at all. I know my temp was stable as well as my salinity so I was a bit confused. After finding nothing in the tests I just thought oh well shizz happens. The next day not only were the 3 colonies from the day before completely RTN, but 3 more were showing signs of it. I immediately tried to frag what I could and save at least a piece of the colonies. This continued over the next 5 days until I completely lost EVERY sps in my tank along with 2 bubble tips and a couple of zoas. I had my buddy come back over with and help me trouble shoot what could have went wrong. After going through everything and testing a second time he asked about the water change that I had done right before this started and If I had done anything different. I immediately thought about the jug I bought that day. I went and grabbed the jug unscrewed the lid and as soon as I did I could smell a chemical smell that smelled like ammonia. I went back to the LFS that I go to so often, and told them what had transpired. At that point they informed me that the jugs they get are normally steam cleaned but this time the company made a mistake and they didn't get cleaned. I told them that I had lost everything and that I was positive it was because of the poisoned jug. They said oh we haven't heard anything from anyone else yet about them but we will see. Please keep in mind that my tank was completely stocked with SPS. I had thousands of dollars in acros including things like blue dragon, rainbow millies, sunset millies, ice fire echinata, plum crazy, purple monster, pearl berry, the list goes on and on....I also had it dialed in and everything growing like crazy. The few people on here who saw my tank before this happened can vouch for the amount of acros I had in my tank. A few days later my buddy suggested I test my water for ammonia again due to the smell in the buckets and sure enough I had ammonia traces in my tank. I have been doing multiple water changes over the past 2 weeks and things seems to be getting back to normal. I have decided to wait another 4-6 weeks before adding anymore acros. I have been completely depressed since this happened and have thought about just selling everything and getting out of the hobby. Thanks to a few fellow reefers that talked me out of it, I'm going to start over. I have heard nothing from the LFS since, and they have done absolutely nothing to make it right. I will take what little blame is mine for not checking their jugs and trusting their word. I really thought that after all the money I spent in there store, and the clear carelessness on there part, they would some how make it right. Needles to say I haven't been back nor will I. I have learned my lesson and I will always check everything that goes in my tank and not trust anyone's word. I am very thankful that most of my rare zoas made it trough and are looking healthy as ever.

OMFG! Dude, I can't even tell you how sorry am I for you. There might not be much I can offer you but if there is anything I can do please let me know. Seriously one of the nicest tanks I've seen in person too.

That's rough, sorry to hear your loss but glad you came back. This hobby is very rewarding and at the same time it can be quite painfull as new lessons are learned.

I would consider making your own water and keeping some for storage of at least the same amount as your tank. I had one of my fishes die for no apperant reason and cause an ammonia spike, I couldn't find where it was in the rock work and it was a newly aquired fish. Anyway, I caught the ammonia spike early enough that no significant damage was done and started doing large consecutive water changes within a couple days and everything leveled off within a week.

Man that's crazy. Sorry for the loss but someone has to take responsibility. What goes around comes around. Glad your tank is recovering.

I'm sorry for your loss. I know you were like me searching for rare or harder to find frags and for such a huge loss to occur through little or no fault to you - especially when you try to do everythign right must be devastating.

Sorry about your loss, very upsetting.

This didn't even happen to me and I am depressed just thinking about it.

Positive thoughts!

Man it was heartbreaking! My wife refers to it as the great depression and says I havent been the same since. Not only did I lose my corals all that time and tweaking everything went down the drain. Luckily I still have some killer zoas left so once the tank is ready ill be selling and trading those to restock. So if anyone has been looking for true Bowsers I will have a polyp or 2 in a couuple of months

I appreciate everyones support and I know you guys understand how rough it is to lose livestock. Ill be back up before no time though.

Should never happen with a reputable store but...
I'm of the mindset that I will be in charge of my own destiny with that much invested. Purchase a Ro/DI unit and over the course of time it will pay for itself.

That sucks. Hopefully no one else buys these containers from that LFS. I think that would tick me off even more knowing there were multiple incidents involved with these containers.
Not sure if your interested in this offer or not but I'm offering it to you.
I'll be in town late tomorrow night (tarpon springs area) and have a free bubble gum chalice to cheer you up :)
Let me know if you have one or not and are interested. I don't have a lot of sps or I would offer you one.
Regards,
Doug

Ps- I understand if your not interested in a chalice having all sps.

Wow, thats is some B/S bud. I bet they still believe it was your fault and not theres. This is definately a game changer. I know theres not much but if theres anything I could do to help, let me know. So sorry for the loss. Im upset if I lose a $10 frag, I cannot imagine all those prized pieces.

Jeeez, thats tough. I remember I felt the same when my tank crashed. I wanted to quit and get rid of it all. Still here and glad you are too. Much respect to you for not naming names.

Oh man I'm so sorry. And the store is friggin shady if they don't at least try to compensate you in some way. They sold you a product that was defective, they are responsible for their own quality control. That is so messed up. I'm happy things are getting better but I also think you shouldn't just let it go as far as the LFS is concerned :/

Thank you to all that offered to give me corals out of there tank that shows what this area is all about.

Typlus5 i agree with you there i should have paid more attention. I am usually very cautious with my tank and everything that goes into it. The people on here that know me and have seen my tank can tell you that I kept it in tip top shape. Lesson learned thats for sure.

I will be back count on it and im sticking with sps regadless of my losses. I think i have answered all pms and thanks again for everyones support!

Anthony

Mr Harvard I feel your pain. As much as I support my LFS and how you dont want to hurt anyone in the hobby I would like to know what store. I am sure you dont want to tell us but A LFS like that we should all know about. I posted on here several months ago about A LFS that was selling water with a TDS reading of 192. I hated to hurt there shop but they just cant get away with something like this. I 2 had spent thousands at this store. I am A business owner and If I make a mistake I need to be held responsible!!!

I hate to name the store but they should be held responsible. Rockin Reef is the LFS. They always took care of me and they have some great employees but this was neglegance and the owner should have made it right.
