Anemone Id

Ok several questions......I have a small purple tip anemone........Never really grew .....never been hosted has just existed last yr.....I just placed this new anemone in the tank....Its literally the size of a canteloupe. What type is it......and wil my clown (false) host it... I ask because while I had it in the LFS for last month I watched numerous clowns host it.....Will it grow bigger and will it split....Its absolutely Gorgeous.....I have already posted a pic of a clown hosting one on the front face of my 92 corner

My guess would be a bleached H. magnifica, but I could be wrong. If you look close, is there small dark spots on the upper column? Could you get a pic of the mouth and the upper column?

its not bleached.....That I know ...I was there when the lfs got it in ........was this color.....and have watched it for last month.........I cant get the mouth now cause of the position.......The foot and all around it is bright pink/red

I'm pretty sure it's an H. Magnifica from my initial view. And it's definitely bleached. Anemones can remain bleached for a long time, there's no way that that anemone is naturally that white. I would read up on husbandry for magnificas and do my best to nurse it back to health. Good luck

Just for reference. This is my magnifica before it began to bleach. You can see how the tentacles are a tanish color and the column is a dark blue/purple.

This is it after it started bleaching. Almost all the tan color is gone and the column has faded.

If we are correct and your anemone is a magnifica, the tentacles should be tan and the column should be a dark red/magenta.

I would agree. It appears to be a H. Magnifica. I would say it is bleached as well. It will be tough to get it back into shape, which I am not even sure if it will.

Based on the few pictures provided, I am not getting the 100% H. magnifica vibe.

Tentacle termination does not look right, symetrical bleaching, apparently red column, staying that low in the tank long enough to have a picture taken, not a darn one of the tentacles show that "I am quite upset" and squished flat look, etc., etc.,....

I am far from 100% on the ID. The tentacles look more like crispa, but I've never seen a crispa with a colored collumn like that. Maybe malu???????? The photo seems to show to many tentacles to be malu, though. Someone here on this forum posted pics of their magnifica with tapered tentacles. I forgot who.
Bottom line is, we'll need more close-up pics to get a positive ID.

I say H.Crispa..no its tentacles don't look H.Malu. I would have to see the underside of the oral disc. I am willing to bet it is a H.Crispa

my guess would be H. Magnifica but not 100% - and i agree with the bleached idea.

and for more pics i would say

more close ups on the tentacles and also on the underside of the anemone

Put on the macro lens or macro setting on your camera and take pictures of its foot. Maybe you can explain what the foot looks like if you can't get a good picture of it. Tell us what the verrucae(spots) looks like. Is the verrucae white or colored? Did the verrucae stick to your hand while trying to place the anemone in the tank?

I would like to see a shot of the mouth and the top of the column. (the blue area in the first pic I posted)

I would guess a bleached H. crispa myself. And as mentioned before, just because it came out of the bag that way doesn't mean it isn't bleached. H. crispa are often bleached when they end up in a dealers tank.

If it digs into the sand, it is definitely not H. magnifica. Has it tried to bury its base at all? That would be a good sign, assuming it is crispa.

Looks like a very ill H. crispa. If its left upside down for long it will die. Is that a wound on its foot?

NO that was some sand it held onto ......It was upside down for the pics.....Why do you say it looks very ill?

Second batch of pictures, picture number 2 specifically, screams H. crispa.

Unless the lighting is playing tricks, it does not appear to be a natural coloration. Yes, I am suspecting a dye job at some point in this animals history.

It does appear to be bleached.

I would dig a hole down to the glass, place the anemone, backfill the sand, place some large rocks around the column.

Hopefully it attaches, eats, and, adapts.
