Anemones can cause color changes in onyx clowns

I've had my Rod Onyx for about 3 years now. I bought a RBTA from Rod at the same time, and they've been inseparable ever since. My avitar was taken soon after I got them, and Rod's avatar is a pic of my female onyx about 8-9 months from hatching, pretty developed. About a year and half went by and the colors started fading-bad. Same anemone, same food, same everything as far as I know. And finally in the past 6-8 months the color has returned to a perfect black. The only thing I can think of is that perhaps the anemone has changed in some way or the clown's hormones changed. I'm just glad the color is back! So don't worry too much if fading occours, it's reversible.

mine never got a chance to fade, just never came in. Still keeping my fingers crossed that it was the anemone that was causing this.

I'll take a look to see if I have any old faded pics. At the time, I was a little ashamed of her :( LOL If you can imagine the dorsal black receding downwards, and the last bars disconnected again. I'm glad to see her back in full blackness!

Yeah, something like the lighter of the two. It is a slow process, and you'll see the black turn to brown and then orange again. Pretty interesting, and frustrating.

One possible relationship might be differences in ph or something. I'm a very sloppy reefer. I don't test, or do much of anything to my tank. After my onyx purchase, I was getting into sps more and started a Mrs. Wages dosing with my top off. I have since had a die off, due to summer heat, and no longer dose. The coloration might be under the same timeline. But like I said, I don't mind the numbers and chemistry enough to keep a scientific record.

My onyx have colored up again but I don't know why. Same food, same rbta/gbta but they've gotten black again. I haven't gotten a new pic of this yet and I have no idea why the color has done this. Could it be a seasonal thing? Temperature? Mine are spawning like clockwork, so they must be happy whatever the cause was!

Here they are when I obtained them in July 2004:

Same anemone (which colored up considerably). The gbta had been under PC's, as had the clowns. I keep the tank under 250watts MH. I'll try to get another pic to update tomorrow, but the black is definitely darker again.

(having trouble getting the pics in here, third time's the charm!)

It's been almost 2 weeks and I'm starting to see a slight change. Looks like black dots on the parts that are meant to be black. Nothing huge at all, nothing worth a picture at this point but a def. a small change. At least that's what I'm telling my self!

Any changes NewSchool04?

I added another pair of onyx with the same anemone the former onyx hosted, and they have lost their color too. On top of this, the pair I had with the anemone are beginning to get their color back. It's been about 3 weeks or so...

This seems very odd...

Perhaps the production of whatever it is that makes the clown immune to the anemones nematocysts somehow "consumes" the black pigment and halts production of it?

I don't think anything is consumed, rather I believe it to be a comoflauging mechanism from what I have seen.

still have your haddoni

No someone else on this forum has it now because I am moving out of state. :(

I really liked that one...it was tough to part with it.

Though I would bring this thread back from the dead, does anyone have any thing to add?
I have always suspected that a Gigantea will darken up a perc, and a mag will lighten it. I also think that stress may have somthing to do with it and possibly the brightness of light.
has?
percs in the wild in gigantea's almost always have high black, but they are also almost always in very shallow water, however wild percs in mags almost always have little black but live in deeper water
it is very random??
