Another carpet...

So after a few months of asking my lfs to get a carpet in...they finally do. Of course right after my brother sends me a gorgeous multi colored carpet. Thoughts and ID on this one? Only 29.99, very sticky. I would of put it next to the other carpet, but I do not know how they will react. So I placed it on the other side of the tank, but it is kind of pressed against the rock, I dont want to disturb it further.

Well right now the clown is in the other carpet. What sort of a reputation, always, sometimes, etc? Just trying to learn

Helianthus is an Caribbean /Atlantic carpet. No clowns in the Caribbean so they obviously don't host clowns in the wild. They are much more likely to eat clowns than any of the true hosting species. It's generally a bad idea to keep one in a reef tank.

And not to be "that guy", but you should probably identify an anemone before purchase since otherwise you might not be able to give them the specs that they need to thrive. There are key differences in the needs of different anemones, even among different carpet species.

Nothing wrong with being that guy, in fact thats why I post on RC. I was unaware that there were carpets from that location. I do not know every species, so clearly thats a mistake. I will call my lfs to see if they take it back. Shame on them as well for telling me it would not be an issue.

The 29.99 price tag wouldve given me cause to be suspicious of what was being sold to me. Generally theyre much more expensive.

That was the smallest of the 3 that they had. The larger ones were more expensive. Thats a good point as I mentioned that callout on another thread about condys.

Few LFS owners know what you learned on this thread. I think as reefers, we just have to know about the animals we are caring for or contemplate to care for. You also need to know your LFS, and always take the LFS owner or employee with large grain of salt.
There are a lot of anemones in the Oceans of the World. There are only 10 clownfish hosting anemone species.

Good point. I struggle with the fact that they dont know what they are selling, but you see it over and over it has to be true.

Well my clown was getting dangerously close to the anemone. It was on a rock so I pulled it out and returned. Also informed the lfs employee who sold it to me and was very happy to know.

Thats that, il keep my s.haddoni thanks everyone!

That anemone looks to me like a S. Mertensii. It wouldn't have harmed your fish. Please see thread below.

I don't think it's a mertens. The tentacles on merts I've seen look a lot like haddoni when stressed -- short and bulbous. I've seen longer tentacles on established merts but not with pointed tips like in the photo above.

Based on color and shape of the verrucae, as well as tentacle appearance, I would agree with Eric that it's probably a S. helianthus.

Thanks bud. Looked at that other link and saw I potentially had a good anemone. Doubt I could get it back from lfs and also say I misinformed them! Lol

:rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes:
You ought to go look at pictures of S. helianthus.
There is no way that your anemone is a Mertensii. The veraccues of Mertensii are different, The foot of Mertensii is tiny, the tentacle shape is different and... and... and...
Should go back to the LFS take a picture of that anemone and then you go look at pictures of S. helianthus if you don't believe D Nak and myself.

If you feel that we gave you wrong advice then just go back and buy it. S. mertensii will sell for at least 200+. Mertensii with green color like that can easy sell for 500+

Best of luck

Nonono. Not saying your wrong. I agree, just saying its funny that I potentially had that mertensii. That would have been funny after telling them off for selling it to me, and giving it back to go BACK in and be like....can I have that back? Lol. (If it was the mertensii)
