Another Green Wolf Eel Thread

:D Another eggball today. I doubt it's fertilized though, the two have had nothing to do with each other aside from her picking on him from time to time. Nobody is tending it either, it's just lying there on the sand. I'm getting woried about the male, he has basically not moved from his spot in the corner since Friday afternoon. Niether one of them has eaten anything either.

The male has not moved from this spot since Friday:

Maybe take out all the decoration and put them back in a more "condusive" barren setting?

Man, if I knew how to use photo shop you can bet I would have gotten those out of there  I just know I'm gonna get a load of poop for that :D

Hey, wolf eels gotta eat too :p

So they ARE food. Culls or losses? Just an honest curious question...wolf eels DOO need to eat!

About 6 weeks ago I was transferring 436 small clowns to GO. I had them in a one gallon bucket drip acclimating. No airline. I forgot about them. Oops. That really hurt and set me back for weeks on production. I froze them just in case something like this came up ;) The WE's don't seem interested. I tossed in some live culls, they ignore those too. No interest in PE mysis either.

The eggball is a light purple, there are visible centers but I have no clue if they are fertilized and I sort of doubt it. I put them in the kriesel and will watch them for a couple days to be sure.

The larvae are all in the substarte now and eating like champs.

I know this picture is terrible but at least it gives you the idea. The blue stuff is a piece of Matala filter pulled apart to loosen it up. They are all deep inside it now. I'm thinking of getting some of that BioBale material. They dart out to grab passing bbs and go right back in.

(we gotta get a collection going to get David a camera with a good macro mode... ;) )

Update time... Adult female finished off the male two days ago, I couldn't save him. The second eggmass was not fertile and I discarded it. The larvae from the hatch are doing great at 5 days, about 3/4"+ and eating well. It's hard to call them larvae really, they just look like little fish. The bodies are slowly elongating as the days go by, making the tails shorter. They are clear, you can easily see the guts in them. I'm not really expecting any major "metamorphasis", I'm assuming a gradual transition to adult form. They basically look like little (transparent) adults now anyway. They feed on bbs and a few have attacked some oto A. I'm hoping to get them on CE soon as well. They can jump at least an inch above the surface, I found one in a tank full of clown larvae next door. There are a couple/ three hundered maybe. Die off was about 50 day of hatch, 10-12 the second day and 1-2 per day since then. I think they are bulletproof but time will tell.

Thanks for sharing this David--very interesting. Sorry to hear that the pair didn't get along to offer you more opportunities. Someone is going to have to go over and get a picture of those little guys for us though!

Just a note, I've made the same mistake of forgetting post-larval clowns in a container while acclimating them to new systems and losing them. Now I just catch and dump them into a new system. This way I can't forget anything and it doesn't seem to bother the fish a bit :)

David I liked your thread, not that much yr pics:D
I also saw a possible pair in a Miami lfs sharing the tank with several moray eels and had my private angel/devil struggling about buying them or not.
At last,I passed.Besides the everyday bigger risk of being caught smuggling fish,I realized that even if they are easy to raise and prolific,I wouldn´t possibly be able to sell more than a few in the local market.
You´re right, better to call them fry than larvae, like banggais, seahorses and such.
How they´re doing?

The expression "easier than falling off a log" comes to mind :D They are doing great, I haven't tried to count yet but I'd say there's 300 or so. They are about 1" now and about a week ago began to develope pigmentation and patterns. I have around 25% of them taking CE and Oto A with a few more getting the idea each day, other than that they depend on bbs. I rarely lose one, maybe one or two per week.

As for "marketability", here is the feedback I get from stores. The biggest problem with the species is they can't get small ones. Generally speaking about 8-10" is the smallest they ever see and they are usually much larger. Then there is the feeding issue, even people with large predator tanks don't want to mess with feeding them. I am going to have 3" wolf eels that eat pellets by the time I'm done :D The stores are very excited and we have agreed on $10 ea to see how they sell at $29 retail. No, there won't be a huge demand for them but at first the "novelty" should provide some good sales.

I will wait to see how growout goes before trying to re-pair the female. I'll post pics as soon as they are big enough to get a decent shot

The babies are 3 weeks old now, almost no losses. They are not growing as fast as I had expected, just over an inch now. Most or all are eating oto A and B1 but still taking a lot of 2-3 day old fortified artemia. Also some frozen CE. No signs of aggression yet, that is my biggest concern. They are a real mess, tank needs daily siphon & wipe down and the sponge filter gets cleaned every other day. The adult female poped out another eggball yesterday, no male present. I suppose I should try to pair her but I really want to wait and see if it's all gonna be worth it. I think 3" wolf eels eating pellets will be so novel that the first group will sell, but after that I doubt there is going to be a sustained market for them. I figure I'd have to dedicate at least a 55 to the pair, that is a lot of real estate.

Oh what the heck, I'll probably do it

wow dvid that is awsome i cant wait for you to be the ultimate seller(clowns, eels, bangaiis ) what camera are you using? tryed the magnifying glass trick?

Well it seems that the usual setting is non desireable, and it would be beneficial for you to remove any rock present. And maybe Some completely dead porous rock for the babies would be cool.

Seems to me there are posts missing here? I'm sure I reported the trouble beginning on day 23. Heavy losses now, first 6, then 12, then 20, then 50 then another 30 yesterday. I haven't checked yet today.
