any "old time" SPS folks still visit this forum?

I'm still here lots of people I knew glad to see ya all still here!!!

I think we need a 10 year sig badge lol.

I remember when 65k halides where popular when Euro Reef changed the skimmer game and people questioned the Beckett skimmer vs the needle wheel! I also remember when miracle mud was the new thing and the purple monster coral like overboard mentioned oh cant forget DR.Mac was in his basement good times.

Lots of things changed I still feel keeping it simple and not confusing it works best. Hold on!! man I'm starting to sound old I take it all back bring on the LED'S and zeo lmao.

I miss seeing 143gadgets and the guy from Tampa that was/is a UPS driver or something like that, can't seem to remember his username. Their tanks were always amazing.

Charles,
How are you man?
I picked up that tank of a tank from you a few years back... :)

That UPS guy was DaddyJax, I will never forget his pics, he was AKA the "Thread Stopper", due to the fact that nobody would post pics after him, lol.... Oh the good old days...

Hey Perry!!

Good times, yes DaddyJax was it!! You're right, we all had color envy.

I haven't been on RC for that long but I've had a salt water tank since the time of dolomite underground filters. We used to boil the decorative coral skeletons to keep them "clean". My first tank was in 1976. A 55 with a wet/dry filter. Live corals were nonexistent and live rock wasn't even thought of.

Seems to be a pattern of old timers turning in to lurkers? Coincidence? hahah
I think a lot of old timers have gotten flamed so often by 2 year old experts that we often stay in the back ground while the same old fire rages on again. I have seen have seen some of the real experts like Eric Borneman and Ron Shimek leave this forum due to flaming. Without the input from individuals like those guys this forum doesnt offer near the value to a newer reefer than it did when i fiirst found it so many years ago. I feel sorry for a newer reefer trying to separate accurate advise from the mass of hype, fads and misinformation that fill so many of the threads posted these days. I dont know how Mr. Farley has done it for so long. Truth is there isnt a lot of motivation for old timers to post on this forum any more. I still check it daily, i think mostly out of habit but often pass over responding.

I'll be 10 years at the end of this month, Oct.31.
I agree that after a while, questions on many mosts become redundant and I feel like giving newbies chance to share their experience instead of posting an answer. I read many posts daily but respond to very few.

Agreed...
Well said, I too don't dare discuss lighting topics, husbandry practice, or anything that is debatable due to the fact that it is counterproductive. I agree with the hype and misinformation comments as well... I too have resided to an occasional comment, but mostly browsing for me :)

I wish you guys would post more often...that type of information from experience and knowledge is invaluable. I was one of the influx of newbs after the release of the "finding nemo" movie. :uhoh2: But im still here, and have made a ton of progress. Learned alot along the way from more experience folks. Still have alot to learn but im finding many of the "newbs" are now coming to ME for advice. LOLOL

Member since 2003, reefing since 1993! Wow, didn't realize it was that long. I think you are a true old timer if Reef Notes was how you learned to reef:)

I recall that DaddyJax......inspired me to learn how to use a camera. Have been in salt since 1997....think that makes me an old timer.

my letter to Julian got published!

Wow. It's really good to see these faces that showed up so far!

I don't think he gets enough credit. In my opinion, the two most important figures in the development of the saltwater hobby are Martin Moe and Julian Sprung.

2001 here...had a tank for a long time...quit for a couple of years....came back for another round of hair pulling...(hair is a lot grayer this time around)

I had pictures of Dr. Herbert Axelrod sitting in a dug out canoe eating discus with the locals burnt into my young mind. These were from TFH when it was still the size of a tv guide. He had the biggest influence on a lot of us back when aquariums were made with metal frames and salt water was considered un-doable by most. While he didnt write about salt water, his early books and magazines detailing the tropical fish of the world as well as his own adventures collecting them forever forged the love of this crazy hoby into a lot of young minds during the 60's.

I still refer to Moe's book occasionally.

I have an Axelrod book from back then. My dad bought a copy when I was young..........it had the color plates sectioned off from the rest of the book. I used to constantly go over that book dreaming of discus & breeding cichlids.

He was also getting the TFH small mags. We always had aquariums of some sort. He lost interest when I was around 12 & I picked it up and have had aquariums for the most part ever since............over 40 years, yikes!

Been in salt since '89 and have never left here since I signed up. A lot of good reefers have come & gone.

Unfortunately it's all money driven now...........marketing & the loudest voices win over. Experienced reefers get frustrated when trying to help someone, while there"s a hoard of people parroting the marketing myths..........they're more intent on winning some sort of argument.

I remember some great discussions that were very informative...........it's been years since a thread like that has happened.
