anyone running a fluidized sand bed biological filter?

i saw one in use on a 'aquarium of the pacific' documentary.

looks like it does a great job but i know zilch about it.

I had one but it was finicky and I decided it wasn't worth the trouble and sold it. As the filter matured the sand would clump and the flow would be restricted. Then you would have to replace the sand. I was always fooling around with the water flow to keep the sand at the right level. It was a rainbow lifeguard model. Maybe others are better.
