Anyone Thinking of Dumping LEDS and going back to Halides

We seem to have more furniture in the room.
The words above are taken out of context.
With MH and T5, LEDs are not necessary. I myself run LEDs on my main DT.
Would I do that if LEDs didn't grow coral?
Throughout this thread I have said that MH cannot be beat by LEDs at this stage of the game, but I run them due to cost and convenience.
I know that one day LEDs or some other form of lighting will make MH obsolete, but that day has not arrived yet.
As far as looking "natural" goes, have any of you seen a picture of Earth from space?
What color are the oceans? Clear, as in see the bottom clear? No they are blue.
Put a couple of gallons of RO in white a 5 gallon bucket and look into it. Is it completely clear? No, it has a blue tint.
Natural reefs at depth do not have 7000K sunlight striking them because the light has passed through several feet of seawater which is blue.
How can you be so obtuse?:headwalls:

I am going to assume that this is sarcasm which does not always come across in writing? At least I hope so....

I'm done.

Yeah, but it is fun watching him go on and on about "natural colors" when that was never part of the conversation or original question. ;)

I will say one thing though, about the trio. I don't believe that adding LED will do anything positive for you as far as growth is concerned. The only thing I think you *may* get from it is a little extra color punch during your dawn/dusk. I was thinking of adding some blue reefbrite strips to my mh/t5 combo but I'm going to pass for now. I'm currently running two blue+, a coral+ and a kz superblue. Going to try replacing the coral+ and one blue+ with two Giesemann pure actinics and see if that gets me a little more blue when all lights are on, and a little more color pop at dawn/dusk.

You can follow my build thread in the general reef discussion forum if you are interested in seeing how that goes.
The bulbs are on order.

sorry i just HAVE to chime in here.
the statement "With MH and T5, LEDs are not necessary" makes no sense at all.
i can just as easily say " with LED, MH and T5 are not necessary"
both statements are true.
all 3 lights , by themselves, are proven to grow all types of corals

oh, and i would also venture to say that there are VERY FEW who strive for "natural colors" in reeftanks. for every single brightly colored coral in the wild, there are tons of brown/green ones....

and for the record, i've had 4 different tanks, with 5 different lighting systems. i've used all 3 types. both of my current tanks are under led. heat, space and adjustability are the determining factors for me. colors can be good under all 3, personally i prefer the color of a good T5 system.

That's what I'm going to try and figure out. I bought the new 20,000k lights from BML which will give me the look and at least sustain. What I have been researching is what spectrum or nm will grow without blowing out the look of 20,000k. I'm considering building my own around the 10,000k range.
I can always fall back to MH/T5 but I really want this to work with LED. If I don't see growth with LED, even after considerable effort, I'll go for a combo.

I haven't posted a build thread yet, but just looked over yours. By the way, I love my A4. Our garage is similar. Mine is heated, but living in the Chicago area I don't dare risk putting any tanks or water in there. We had an extremely cold winter this year so even opening the doors dropped the temperature fast.

You sure about that cheif?

You said: "250w Radiums.
I'm not trying to achieve those colors. I like more natural colors."

If you haven't seen a natural reef up close and personal, how do you know what natural looks like?:debi:

Quite, sure... Chief. <--- look, i even spelled it correctly.
What you quoted was, as I said time and time again, not part of the original question.
You just latched on to it since you obviously had nothing pertinent to add to the conversation and now two pages later you are still harping on it. Congrats.

And my diving experience hasn't turned up anything like this, which to me is a little too intense for my taste.

That is LED. It is what my tank looks like when I turn off the whites and colors and just run blue/UV. Trippy is the best I can say.... :)

Yes, it is. And yes it is. :D In another pic you can see the pucks.
I'll let everyone know if the pure actinic t5's create eye-nuking color like that but I doubt it.

I bet JPMagyer could tell us, if he's still following this travesty of a thread. ;)

personally- I LOVE IT!

No John, I believe they we photographed under LEDs.
They were just grown under Metal Halides.

I need to forget I'm not in the lounge sometimes.
My comment was totally tongue in cheek.

And besides, Metal Halides and deep sand beds with a good Berlin system is the ONLY(thanks ironeagle) way to maintain a proper tank period.
