Anyone Thinking of Dumping LEDS and going back to Halides

I just laugh at the people that won't go to LED. I started my tank 3.5 yrs ago with LED's; I have never used anything else. I did go from just blue and white to a full spectrum LED. I have always had great growth and color. Do you die hard MH or T5 owners, own the Manufactures, have stock or anything that keeps you from switching, maybe the electric company? Do you mine coal? I too hate change, but man this just technology. Do you still own a tube TV or LED? Does your car still have a crank starter? Oh wait maybe you still horse and buggy to get to work? All I can say new technology works. Stop having such a closed mind. ooh cant wait

New technology is not always better....

Tube TV's lasted 20+ years. New flat screens last 3 to 10.

Old fashion Maytag washers lasted 15+ years. The new energy efficent ones last maybe 5 years. The crappy electronics went out on mine after 3 years.

Are LED's the best lighting source?

Each tank is different and has different needs.

A lot of people hate Halides because they waste energy. Well my basement is cold. The halide helps warm the basement to a degree and keeps the tank warm so my heaters don't kick on as much. For me its a good thing. Other people have heat probelms and have chillers. I feel sorry for them.... But their tank is different then mine. I'm running 2 LED fixtures and 1 Metal Halide fixture. My tank is happy. In the end thats all that counts...

I love my T5s, and I think the tank does too:

I've been following this thread from the begining and feel leds do fine for some systems just as the one posted above. I find that most LPS and all softies do really good under leds but I can't get the resualts I'm looking for with them over my SPS system, there's to much color shift as well as shading under larger corals over the long term. I did run full spectum leds over my 325gal sps system for better than two years but have changed to full T5s now and very happy with progress I've seen so far. I also have a 125gal reef flat that is LPS/ softy system and leds work well for it, acans and scollies don't much care for then over the long term for me anyway. Just my 2 cents and not bashing either light system

thanks Guerry

I agree, and what you state has also been my experience. This is where a statement like I get great colors doesn't necessarily tell the story. The SPS in the above are pale. Soft corals and LPS are fine under LEDs, IME, but I would not be satisfied with the SPS colors I see above.

I have a mixed softy/LPS reef and it is lit by two Radion Pros. I would not trade these lights for anything else. But my 465 gallon SPS tank is lit by Radiums and VHO actinics. Just can't get the most intense SPS color with LEDs.

So to be clear, since you have never used anything but LED, you are not thinking about dumping LED's and going back to MH? You have never used anything but LED, and because it is you, it is clearly the only lighting technology worth using. Anyone who isn't you, and doesn't use what you use are clearly fools. Is that what you are saying?

"I just laugh at people" who have only used one tech and sneer at people who have years and years of experience with just about every lighting tech that has come along. You have been in the hobby for only 3.5 years and you have decreed that anyone who doesn't use LED's is living in the past? Really? Who has the closed mind? Where would this hobby be if it weren't for MH, T5, PC's and the absolutely oldest tech ever...the Sun.

Posts like yours do nothing to further the education of people who are looking for the best solution for their tanks, it only causes confusion, and sadly the confusion is yours. This may seem blasphemous to you but sometimes it isn't LED, which is what this thread is all about.

I've been following your build on the club site and must say your system is looking great, I started a thread there about changing from leds to t5s on my tank and got the feeling a linching mob was on the way to my house LOL
