Anywhere to buy fish that don't need to be QT'd?

Last year, I bought a False Personifer from DD and placed it in a virgin, but well cycled QT. It came down with Velvet within the first week and died. They honored their guarantee with no problem. If I had put this fish into my 180 display without QT..................well, you can do the math.

I bought a butterfly two weeks ago from DD & also placed it in a virgin QT tank by itself. It came down with ich a few days later. I sent them an email & they said "sorry":hmm2:

They did extend the warranty an extra 7 days but I have doubts about the effectiveness of their QT protocol with regard to diseases & would never put one of their fish or anyone elses straight into my display.

I went to a fish store yesterday who run copper in all of their fish tanks. All of the fish looked really healthy and obvioulsy didnt have any signs of ich. dispite the stress issue, would it be ok to add a fish from this place directly to my DT?

No........unless you know specifically how long a fish has been treated with copper you'll still be taking a huge risk.

I have purchased fish from a LFS that rumor has it that they run copper in their tanks and the fish look great . Not all but some have ended up with ich , man am I glad I Q it would be a pain in the you now what if I had not . Always Q never would I take a chance .

stubby

Most of the lfs that run copper in their tanks do it to keep ich in control in their systems.I know of one that gets in fish one day and they are for sale the next day.He also runs it at a lower lvl then is needed to treat a fish.

A fish has to be in copper for 8 weeks to kill ich. Just qt the fish, don't treat it unless it's sick. Or just risk your display. After all it is your tank.

I agree. There is no way to effectively QT hundreds of fish at once.

A fish has to be in copper for 8 weeks to kill ich? Where did you get this from exactly? Maybe your tank has to be fallow for 8 weeks, but certainly not the other way around. Thanks for the great advice, it was extremely useful....

There is a vendor in New Jersey, Dr. Jim at the Amwell Bird Hospital, who runs a full quarantine on all his fish before he sells them. He QT for 4-5 weeks and treats for all parasites. His fish would be the only ones I trust not to QT.

I'd pay double/triple if somone actually did this...and did it right. I HATE Qt'ing fish but have been burnt in the past and have too many nice fish now to risk it.
