aquamaxx ConeS CO 1 skimmer review

Well it looks like marine depot pushed there eta to 2-4 months. I think if you ordered one in the past week there allocation is full until the next order comes. Some times I think if I should order some other skimmer but I can't find a comparable. I really also like the quality of aquamaxx

local shop here in Canada just got an order of about 50 or so of them ! going to get it tomorow!

Seems like the back order logjam is about to break free and I should be getting my CO-1 sometime next week. I'm building a new sump right now and I wanted to check and confirm that 9.25/9.5 inches of water seems to be the sweet spot...

Thanks

Jon

Hi Jon,

that range should be fine. 9.5 is my spot but if you have a decent load 9.25 should be peachy.

happy reefing

Is 9.5 the recommended height on the CO-2 as well? I'm going to have to re-measure my sump baffle height...

i would recommend starting at 8"
and see how it responds. It pulls twice the air as the CO 1.

there are several that are running the CO 2 on this thread so I would suggest you PM them to see where they settled.

Would the CO-2 work for a medium bio-load 135g tank with 40g sump or should I step it up to a CO-3. I'm really torn between a CO or Reef Octopus DCS-150.

CO 2 would be fine

havent seen any reviews on the DCS-150 so cant comment on that one

a little update on how quiet my CO 1 is;

Did a water change this week and noticed my CO1 going berzerk when I looked into the sump. I wouldnt have noticed it but just happened to glance into the cabinet. I normally have the skimmer plugged into my top power bar along with my return, reactor and circ pumps and kill them when I do a WC. I had purchased a new MP pump and forgot I switched the CO 1 plug to the bottom bar, so the skimmer was still running while the sump level increased. The skimmer is so quiet that I couldnt hear it when all other pumps were off. Fortunately I had already cleaned the cup-whew!!

Quite a difference (sound wise) between the shark pump and the sk400 I tried on it

Hi reeftivo,

I share a similar experience with you. This skimmer in my country is branded as JNS though.
The skimmer went crazy when I was switching filter socks due to an increase in water level in the sump, and I took a pretty long time to tune. Even after turning the air valve, the skimmer hasn't returned to its original water level.

Anybody had similar experiences with this or ways to resolve it? It's definitely a good skimmer but the time taken to tune can be a pain.

The tuning on mine was a breeze.

My overflow issue was only because I forgot to make sure the skimmer was unplugged when I did my water change and had nothing to do with tuning.

Did you run the new filter sock in the washing machine on hot cycle without soap? New filter socks can make any skimmer go crazy because of chemical production residues. If you just rinse them in the sink, it usually doesn't get all the residues out and the skimmer can still act up.

You mention an air valve on yours! The aquamaxx coneS CO 1 has no air valve so I'm curious as to how yours (JNS) is set up. Could you post a pic?

On mine, I can't imagine putting an air valve on it because it needs every bit of the 340-360lph that the shark pump can provide.

What did you try the sk400 on reeftivo?

Hi grandp10

I tried it on the CO 1

I didn't give it much time on the CO 1 (3 days) but it was considerably louder than the shark and the bubble size was noticeably larger than with the NW on the shark.

I bought the sk400 for my ATB multi but figured why not try it on the CO 1

Oh, my apologies, I wasn't really sure of the technical term of the part until I saw the first page. It should be the effluent/output riser. Thats where you tune the skimmer I suppose.
I did not manage to rinse the filter sock. I guess that contributed partially. This skimmer sits in water with a depth of ~ 10 inches though.

Anyway, here's a photo of it
