Arctic nights

Just another evening in Alaska :). Actually it's been a pretty lack luster Aurora season up here. As usual clouds roll in when activity is up. Not last night though, it was crystal clear. Maybe the subzero temps had something to do with it?? :lolspin:

Now if you all on the East coast :)wave:) would stop hogging up all the snow we'd be in good shape up here :D.

Holy moses that's awesome. I must admit, I've had a pretty strong desire to live in Alaska at least for a little while but I think it would take a miracle to convince my wife.

What is a typical exposure time on a shot of the aurora like the ones you posted?

Thanks.

I think those were around 6 seconds F2 at ISO 800. Forecast is good for tonight again so I'm going to head out and wait, and wait, and wait some more. Such is the life of Aurora photography. Sadly my life has infinitely way more hectic, and simultaneously my patience has gotten way less. Hopefully as the wake of the past 2 years of chaos dwindle I'll get more time out and renew my passion :).

Hang in there Louis! You do a great job capturing the natural beauty that is unique to your neck of the woods and I appreciate your taking the time to share with us.

I wish that some x class flare hits the earth sometime, then I'd be able to see auroras in the uk where I am!

Man, I wish X Flares would hit here so I could see some serious action up here! A few Sunspots are active and have some potential for flares. Only M Class but at this point I'll take anything!

Last night was a bust. 2 hours standing in single digit temps and all I really saw was a faint arc. Seems Aurora forecasting is at best (if that) a little better then weather forecasting when it comes to accuracy :).

Here is an image I took at one of the last solar flares. That's when it gets unreal. Probably posted this one before but it's easy since it's up on photobucket already.

Wow...
It's simply breathtaking.

I'm trying to think what else I can say but can't think of anything... And I'm never speechless..

Inspiring photography.

Thank you man!

Glad you guys enjoy them. Sure wish we had more solar activity, snow, or something! Lame up here at like 40 degrees. They are even starting the Iditarod up in Fairbanks because we have no snow :(. No dog pictures for me this year I guess, bummer.

Yeash - funny how we're up here in Alaska hating on the warm spell and lack of snow wishing it was cold and snowy :). -37 with the windchill doesn't sound too bad. Now if it was -37 without the windchill, then I might be singing a different song. You just need some down gear and you'll be good to go!!

Funny thing is in 2004 they used my self portrait image for the cover of the competition issue https://www.naturesbestphotography.com/issuesummary.php?id=9 (Calvin Hall beat me out for the category but they used my shot for the cover :)) . They made a huge deal in the write up section that i took my jacket off for the image (can't remember how cold it even was). It made me smile because like all the reality TV show today them made it sound so dramatic! Truth is I had some heavy layers on and it was a 20 second exposure or something. It wasn't like I was out there for 20 hours without a jacket. I don't even think I was really cold :).

It's been almost tropical here at 8000 ft in the rockies. No snow to really speak of since december and i am jonesin for a good powder day.

Great Pics. I too wish i could talk my wife into moving a bit further from the grid, let alone a vacation. I just want to jump out of a helicopter there once...just once.

Thanks for sharing.

the photo area just breath taken, would look to see it but don't want to be there.

LOL, my mom says the same thing. She can see why I love it up here, but she'd never want to live here. Right about now I don't to be here either, it's raining. Really? Rain, in February, in Alaska?? Not global warming either unless that only affects one side of the continent at a time :).

We're having your weather this month.

This month? How about all winter :). Give it back man, give it back, we miss it.

It's February in Alaska and it's raining. What is the deal with that? They have already moved the Iditarod start to Fairbanks since we have so little snow cover don here. At this rate we're not going to have any at all. It's a shame because the winter wonderland we usually have is so spectacular. Oh well, such is life I guess.
