Are gigs the only nem to have switching tentacles?

Just stopped by the LFS when they were unpacking their shipment. They had a nem that came in as a "green carpet". It's definitely not a haddoni. Pretty positive it's a gig. I'll get a pic tonight when I get in my treatment tank tonight but it's tentacles are definitely twitching in the bag. It has a base with a blue hue to it and a brown/green disc. Just want to confirm it's a gig and not a helianthus.

Pictures will really help.

Sounds like a gig. But with out seeing a few things it is hard to say with out miss-reading one criteria.

In my experience giganteas are the only carpet anemones that have twitching or waving tentacles without being moved by flow..

Thanks. I'm positive it's a gig now after getting it home out of the bag. The crappy clip on light makes it look browner than it is but it's looking pretty healthy so far. I think it will end up brown with green in the tips if I manage to not kill it.

Good score - good luck!

I passed on a little brown/green/multicolor one locally a couple of months ago, and I regret it every time I am in that shop... :(

Yea, it's not the best looking one I've ever seen but it looks a lot better than those pics show. The white light really washes its color out but I'm hoping the light will be sufficient for during QT. It's actually the first one I've ever seen in a store here in FL.

Looking good. Post up a video or two when you get a chance. Just to see how it reacts to flow and all.

I always like to show people how the start out and then progress to greatness.

That's gonna be a MONSTER in like 6 months. Be careful, large Gigs cam kill smaller host clowns. Just got rid of mine after 4 years. He was the size of a dinner plate and believe killed a number of creatures in my reef.

I know they can be fish eaters but I'd be surprised if it ate my perculas. It will eventually go in a 60g cube. I'm hoping the other fish will be smart enough to stay away. I have the lights set to ramp up slowly and i think that helps keep them from getting scared when the lights come on in the morning.

They will not kill your clowns. And the anemone is the host not the clowns. Gigantea are beautiful even the one that does not have bright colors. He will not grown much unless you feed him.
Timnem70,
It does not seem like you keep Gigantea before.
Gigantea are fish eater and will eat any non clownfish that blunder into it.

They are beautiful creatures and I know I don't have your expertise OrionN (I follow your advice on anemone a lot over the past couple years) I am not sure why I said host clowns and meant to say smaller fish and others that happen to get close. My Gig was in a 300 gallon for almost 4 years. I had a number of other anemones that were large and were fed indirectly but the Gig was a carnivore through and through and ate like mad. I think it's still at the LFS that I got store credit for. They told me It was returned twice after they tied to sell it cause it "kills fish". He says it's going in a 60 gallon and they are beautiful creatures. Just be careful with the smaller stuff in your tank with it in there that's all. In a 60 gallon your fish will be smaller so... Thanks

Do you have any pic? I might be interested. Thanks

I don't directly feed mine, and it has not grown an inch. It has on occasion taken a fish or two (smaller ones at that) in the couple of years that I have had it, but nothing like the S. haddoni that I had before it - it was big and beautifully florescent green, and ate everything but the clownfish being hosted, doubling in size in just a couple of months. While I miss it, trading it in back then for the purple gig I have now was the best decision I have made in some time.

I would not consider gigs to be much of a problem with other fishes usually, and are infrequently available around here (once a year for a good one if lucky) - I will not pass up another!

There is no doubt that Gigantea can eat really big fish. I got picture somewhere when my 8 inches Gigantea ate my 7 inches Albalone (shell length of about 4 inches). The albalone was 1/2 digested when the Gigantea spit it out. My Gigantea was sick for a few days after that meal.
Light dim down for the night before off is great. This and don't startle you fish. This will keep a lot of the fish from getting kill by carpets.

Very nice. Thanks for the video.

Next time you do some tank maintenance on it / water change. Leave the pump off for the video. Lets see how it moves and reacts on its own.

Keep it up and keep posting in this thread so we can see your progress.

Thanks!

Yup, looks good - would be interesting to see what color it is under typical reef lighting (hint, hint)... ;)
