i really like carpets and i want one for my 40g. first of all i have a bluespotted jawfish and a pair of really amzing picasso's.........is there any chance that the carpet will eat them? second what is there any carpet that can go in a 40g?

Probably not a good idea to put a carpet in less than 75. Some species have been known to grow to like 1.5 feet. Also, they have stronger stinger cells, strong enough to leave a noticeable sting on the back of a tank-keeper's hand. They are powerful. They will also kill anything they can get in contact with. They are hard to keep and hard to predict. I have seen them in larger tanks where they thrive but I also hear a lot of horror stories of that "beautiful carpet killing my LPS".

I just started reefing so you don't have to take my advice but I have done pretty extensive research on the types of anemones and a carpet is not right for you. that my humble opinion.

Cheers m8

well i want to start with a baby carpet and when it gets big i will put it in my 75. the only thing i am worried about is it killing or eating my 700 dollar fish.

What kind of carpet? S. gigantea, S. haddoni, or S. mertensii ?
thank you
thank you
thank you :)

because of several factors (40 gallon with 'Jaws') I don't think any fish hosting carpet anemones are a good choice for this aquarium.
Try a Bubble-tip.

You are welcome Gary. :)

And I agree with Gary.

S. gigantea --- too hard to find a healthy one, and too difficult to keep, esp. in a 40.

S. haddoni --- (( should be noted that I have 3, and have had very good luck with them, have only lost one fish in 7 years )) Are easier to keep, but are known fish eaters. Even with me having good luck with mine not eating fish, I would never put one in a 40 with a jawfish.

S. mertensii --- I have no experience with them, so can't comment. Plus I don't see them for sale all that often.

So, agreeing with Gary again, a BTA would be the best choice.

ok i saw a really nice rose bulb anemone at my lfs. they said it's double A grade. does anyone know where i can get one like that? my lfs sold it.

What do you guys think of a carpet in a 40g species only tank. I would set it up as a lagoon style tank as well, plants should aid in nutrient export and water quality.

didnt know they were grading rose anemones now.

id say post in your local clubs forum or in the wanted section and find a local person that has some clones!!

700 dollar fish? what fish is that? the Blue spotted Jawfish? Wow! i had one, and it cost me 120 here in az. thats crazy! mine went carpet surfing even with eggcrate on top, i dont know how he squeezed through.... im glad i didnt pay 700 for it though and lose it! that would suck. RBTA's are fairly easy to find because the split so much. i would just post and ask around, im sure somebody has one laying around somewhere...

I had a Haddoni in a 46 bow for 5 mths and all is well! The tank was set up for 4 yrs before i got the anemone! So lets not say it cant be done BUt there was a check list that i went threw, size was 1 thing was not going to put a 2' carpet in a 46 and of course Health. Although was able to hook a awesome 90 so my Haddoni is in there and Happy as can be! So i guess what im trying to say if you want a reason to buy a larger tank then put a smaller carpet in the tank. There yo go bigger tank for the carpet!
