To those with the ASM G3's with the gate valve mod done..

Is the air intake on these LOUD?

Does it kinda gurgle for air?

Is it Okay to break the skimmer in with the gate valve on?

Thanks

:)

I didn't notice any change in noise....and yes break the skimmer in with the gate valve on.

Andy

Is it loud otherwise ?

This one is pretty loud compared to my old euro reef rs80, seems to be sucking for air with a gurgling noise

I dont think its loud, my drain seems louder, got a picture of how its configured ?

I'll get a pic, this is louder the my drain, I can hear it when I walk into the room

could it also be that its sucking air bubbles in from the pump, would that affect it ?

I'm trying this Salter Labs Oxygen O2 Humidifier Inline Water Trap:

Mine gets loud when there's salt or something else clogging the line. Run some hot water though the line to make sure it's not clogged and likewise, check the fitting where it attaches to the pump - that may have a small clog in it.

I went out for the day, just got back in..

Thanks for the replies, I'd still like to post a pic of how I have it setup later or tommorow in the AM...

I may look into that silencer, good link, thank you :)

It seems to have lessend with the noise a touch

I have to remove the egg crate on the bottom of my sump, doing that will put the output just under the water line and that will reduce some noise as well..

The venturi sounds like sucking through a straw when you run out of soda or w/e you may be drinking :)

How deep is the water that the skimmer is sitting in?

The skimmer is in a solid 8" of water..

Majority of the noise now comes from the output of the gate valve as it's just a touch over the water line.. When I take the egg-crate bottom out, that will give me 1/4" which should put it just under the water line... Can I add a piece of PVC to the output to further submerse it ?

:)

andyjd,

thanks for all of your responses to date..

I was told the way that your gatevalve is incorrect.. and I know that's how asm has it setup...

I have mine like this and I was told this is the proper way...

now I am all sorts of confused...

no worries!

I've also had mine setup like this
gatevalve.JPG

that also came from asmskimmer.com

FWIW when I put a pipe up towards the collection cup I also get a gurgle sound.

Now do you get the gurgle from the air line?

thats where my gurlgle comes from, I put the old silencer from my euro reef on it, took the noise down a touch...

no noise from the airline...just a constant sucking.
Have you taken your pump apart and made sure the impeller & venturi are clear, I'd also pull out the needle wheel and make sure nothing is broken/stuck.

Keith you have seen my G# with Gate valve mod. Mine is attached to the adjustable riser pipe.. Yours is sitting pretty low. Also you can extend the return pipe so it is submerged more. That will help some. Mine extends 1 1/2 from the bottom of my sump.. The Air intake into the venturi canbe semi loud and gurgle. I don't hear it much over the trickle of water from my filter sock. I find my skimmer runs very quiet.

I have my gate valve mounted vertical. I like my fingers dry at all times during adjustment. I do not get a gurgle from the rider pipe above the tee & if I do its so suttle I can't hear it in my living room.

I added a simple coupler to the end of the drain elbow, my splashing noise is no more now due to the drain being below the water level.... :)

The air sucking noise I get is the excact sound of sucking through a straw and running out of soda... (it's coming from the air hose its-self) The silencer off my old euro reef took the tone down a touch..

If anyone else gets that noise, I'm good to go :)
The noise is now equal or a lil less then my drain, blends in with the trickle of the water flow from the sump.

Just wanna make sure I'm not losing my head.. I will double check the venturi part tommorow and make sure its fully clean, I pulled the cover off before I ran the pump, The needle wheel was clean with no broken pegs.

Kris,

I cannot for the life of me remember how yours was set up

(Pain pills, kill memory) :o

Any last thoughts on the sucking through the straw noise from the air line?

normal ya think?

Thanks again man !!!

Seems like ya went out of your way to keep responding to me :)

I appericate it...

I'm actually gonna pull it out later today, clean it all again real quick for the hell of it and I may change how the gatevalve is...
