ASM Skimmer Club!

Ok I have some questions:

1. My ASM G3 is 23.5" tall, how much verticle room do I need?
2. Can I do a RDSB with 230gph with an 1" outlet into the ASM Skimmer as the water inlet with a recirculation mod? A maxijet 900 will be powering it? A lot of headloss since it's going through a bucket, so maybe about 190gph or so?
3. For the inlet, can I just use a uniseal, or do I need a tap and barb setup? I was hoping for a hard pvc pipe going through the uniseal.

Thanks!

Has anyone heard of anyone (yes I realize that's a lot of people) modding the G-4 with 2 pumps feeding it like the larger ASM models? Would this or the recirc mod be most likely to kick up the foam? I have my G4 on a 180 gal and have verrryyy little skimmate. I have a filter bag on the discharge which I presume is taking out a lot of the junk that would eventually make its way into the cup but still... Any feedback would be appreciated.

1- an inch of room over the top of the skimmer is plenty....I've hear of people getting away with 1/2 an inch

2-I have no idea what RSDB is....A maix jet 900 will be fine for the feed pump

3- I used a 1" uniseal for the feed inlet....I then slid a 3/4" thread x slip coupling into the uniseal on the threaded side I put a Thread x barb 90 to connect the hose to.

  1. You need about 1/2" to take the collection cup off so anything over 24" should do.
  2. RDSB? Anywhere between the two numbers you mention(190-230) should be fine to feed a recirc G3.
  3. You can use a uniseal for the inlet using pvc.

EDIT: That Bill and Elaine is/are really on top of it, he/she/they even type faster than I do.:clown: :clown: :clown:

awesome thanks!

rdsb = remote deep sand bucket. basically a covered 5 gallon bucket filled with sand, with a couple inches of water on top (for Natural Nitrate Reduction). It will be powered by the maxijet, then draining to the skimmer.

RDSB = Remote Deep Sand Bed

I see no reason you can feed your skimmer from the output of the RDSB.

I want to use fewer pumps.

sorry typo - should have read "i see no reason you could not" :)

I have a little too much flow going through my rsdb, or I would feed my skimmer with it's output.

Hi all, just read all 27 pages, I will be getting my G3 this week for my 150. I will prob do the gate valve mod, but not the recirc at this time. Perhaps later. not sure f I should keep using my Kent Nautilus TE as additional filtration or not. Any imput on this?

I'm about to place an order for a G3 skimmer and I'll have them drill it for recirculation, an extra $20 - I'm a little freaked out about drilling a hole in a new skimmer.

Do you think it's worth it to have the gate valve mod as well as the recirc?

I have a 1" drain going from my RDSB to the skimmer.

I believe all you need is a uniseal for the size of the maxijet 900's outlet... should be 1/2" =) Double check the outlet size, and then that's the size of the uniseal.

if you're really freaked out, $20 is not a bad investment to make sure it's done right

I got such a good deal on a brand new one, I'll take the risk.

how hard could it be? A hole saw, slow drilling, walla. hopefully. crossing my fingers.

Whats the best way to do the feed pump mod. What size uniseal would be best to hook up a maxijet 900? Jim

Try this link,http://www.asmskimmer.com/modifications.htm click on the picture of the mod you want to do and it will give you a description of the parts and tools you need as well as some pics. Hope it helps. The only thing I would do different is on the gate valve mod where I did the mod suggested by Bill and Elaine which worked better ffor me. He has pics of it burried somewhere in this thread.

3/4" uniseal would work fine and thats what I used with my mj900. check out http://asmskimmer.com for more info on the mod, its really simple.
