Is it best to direct feed a G-3 with a gate valve mod?

It's always best to get the dirtiest water into the skimmer. Direct feeding has its own issues and requires some additional plumbing to deal with surge and bubbles. I'm at work and don't have it handy, but try looking on the Deltec and EuroReef threads or forums on the web. Plenty of examples on how to plumb it if you want to go that route.

Im having a problem with my g-3 its not filling the chamber the whole way with bubbles only half way???

any ideas I just took it out and cleaned everything yesterday tore the pump apart cleaned the venturi and the air line
and its still doing it

help please im already battling higher nitrates I need my skimmer working properly

I tried putting one of those airline tees in that you can adjust the air flow and adjusted it down a little that seems to be adding more bubbles to the chamber

any opinions???

unhappy 4 days after mod

unhappy 4 days after mod

looking four some insight here. About four days ago I did the re-circ mod on my g-2. Skimmer has gate valve mod and had previously been runing on my sytem for over a year and a half. I waited for a break in period (new pvc) and am less than happy with skimate production. I am running a sedra 3500 as the re-circ, mj400 as the feed pump. I was thinking of switching to a sedra 5000 as the re-circ pump.......but I dont think the pump will match up to my NEWLY DRILLED HOLES :mad2: :mad2: :mad2: !!
any advice is greatly appreciated.

MJ, how do you have your g3 setup? mods and plumbing

Right now my overflow drains into one of these:

http://www.reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=917381&highlight=prugs

It really helps with bubbles and noise. My G3 is modded for recirc and the gate valve. I'm using a small pump that's connected via a uniseal to that bubble extractor that feeds about 150gph into the skimmer. My skimmer outflow is directed into my return area, not back into the skimmer area.

The goal is get the skimmer the dirtiest water from your tank. A direct flow is best, but what I'm doing is kind second best. The direct flow has some issues (mostly solveable) but I already had the bubble extractor and I didn't feel like changing all my plumbing again to accomodate the direct flow.

Don't know if this will help or not, but my G-4 had the holes drilled in the wrong place.
To fix that I found some 1/8" grey pvc material from a local acrylic supplier. Drilled the proper sized hole for the rubber insert, heated the pvc slowly in my oven and layed the limber hot pvc material on something the same dia. as the skimmer and let it cool.
Set the pump up next to the skimmer and placed the patch where it needed to go and used pvc glue (I was told weld-on 40 would be better). Used a small spring clamp to hold it in place for 24 hours.
The first picture shows the hole in the wrong place,

Patched hole.

MJ-
so you have your overflow going to this bubble extractor then a feeder pump is used to feed your skimmer?

mfinn, that looks a pretty damn good patch job! Color matching too.

Thanks, my goal was to make it look like it was suppose to be there.

with the numbers of people experiencing missed drilled holes... I will definitely keep this in mind.

can anyone chime in on this? No one really said anything about this. And I'm also curious as to what may be the issue.

*bump

I think my impellar has worn out on the sedra pump there is a lot of play between the impellar and the housing

therefore causing the pump not to move as much water

any other sugestion s before I order a new one??

Yes. I drill a hole in the bubble extractor and stuck some tubing in there so my feeder pump draws from there. Seemed like the closest I could get to a direct overflow without replumbing everything.

ahhh... i gotcha. And that way you wont have to deal with the actual "direct flow/feed" issues. Like the unconsistant flow... Would you mind posting up a picture of your skimmer's plumbing?

Well i got my g3 in yesterday. Which is crazy cause i placed the order on Tuesday. nice* I'm now looking to pick up the gate valve mod parts. I see theres a few ways to have the gate valve mod setup. Like the Bill and Elaine style.... etc... how do you guys have your gate valve set up?
