This seems to be the ASM guru hang out, so I'll post this here.

My G1-X has been up and running, and pumping salt water, for a week now, but I'm getting next to zippy in the cup. Foam isn't a problem (in fact the foam runneth over). It's thick enough to shave with. Lord knows there is enough to skim (50lbs of TBS rock arrived on Tuesday, I'm now at 0 amm, near zero nitrite, and about 70 nitrate), but all I'm getting is water and some dust kicked up when I moved the sand around a day or so ago. I've adjusted the pipe (it now sits just above the sponge). I'm at a complete loss. Suggestions? Ideas?

Thanks much!

folks with a feed pump for the recirc mod.... what pumps are you guys using? I have a g3 that i would like to find a find pump for. something about 1.5x the volume of your tank?

On my 240 I'm setting up now, I have the G-4x with the recirc mod. I'm going to use a maxi-jet 1200.

Bill & Elaine style.
It has been stable & easy to adjust for me.

I use an old 175gph Hagan for feeding my G3. My total water volume is about 80 gallons.

Iv'e never used the tube, I installed the gate valve mod on my G3 on day one. :)

Actually, upon further review, I've realized I have a two part problem.

I've discovered that a moment after turning the skimmer on, a whole mess of microbubbles come out of the sponge that surrounds the riser. So I am left with these two questions:

(a) how the heck do I fix this?
(b) is this the reason why my skimmer is pulling almost nothing out?

BHF- I think my skimmer took that long to break in. I would be patient and maybe raise your stand pipe up slightly to get a wetter skimmate. Just plan on a gate valve upgrade in the near future.
Also, is your skimmer in a section of your sump that is constant?
Because it really matters with repsect to adjustment.
Maybe some kind of bubble difuser resting a little above the bottom will help with the bubbles.

what is the biggest SPS system a modded G2 can run effectively?

i have a G2 and the only mod i have on it so far is a drilled out venturi port. is there anything i can do to this skimmer to run it on my future 120 or should i just sell it and get a bigger skimmer?

i know its a stretch but im working less than ever now that ive gone back to school and the reef funds are at an all time low. thanks for the help.

sell it get bigger or do some diy and get a sedra 5000 and uni seals.

It would be just a shorter version of the g-3. Only problem I may see is micro bubbles making their way back into the sump since the entire skimmer from top to bottom would be full of air.

i figured, i was thinking of borrowong a sedra 9000 and seeing what happened. also, id hate to come up short and have to sell a modded skimmer, they seem to scare people.
ive never had micro bubble probs so id hate to start now. ive been looking at a MRC 2 for the sake of future proofing my skimmer but im not sure i can afford the power to run it (BGE in baltimore just had a 15% price hike).

Yeah, I had my eye on that mod. Maybe next weekend. I raised the pipe as you suggested. We'll see how that works. Wetter, dryer...hell, I'd be happy with any simmate worth mentioning.

I just got my g3 this week and now waiting for my return pump to come in. In the meantime, I'm planning on getting the gate valve and recirc mod done. I've been seeing two different ways of mounting the pump for the recirc. some mount it parallel and some in a vertical position. any perks on which way to mount or is it just preference?

I bet I have a question that hasn't been asked here before.
I pulled the smaller grey riser tube from the bigger riser tube completely out. Now when I place it back in there is no resistance, like the there was before and the water comes out of the bigger tube. It doesn't come out the top of the smaller tube.
What happened?
This is on the G-4x

mfinn,

Is the rubber o-ring still in the bottom portion of the riser tube? That's really the only thing that makes the "resistance" in the riser tube.

It's probably down in the bottom of the big tube.

I just ran upstairs and i mean literally i ran up to check mine. I took mine apart this morning to "play out"/imagine it with the gate valve mod. When i went upstairs to slide my riser tube back in there was still the "resistance". hahaha.

It has to be your o-ring...

I installed the gate valve mod on my G-4 and I am getting alot of gurgling noise from the top of the pipe.
Would a cap with a hole in it reduce the noise like the durso cap?
