The higher up the riser tube the bubble line is, the wetter the skimmate. The lower, the dryer. The actual level will vary per system due to bio-loads.

Fuzzy,

I just purchased a G4X for my 180. I have about 275 gal or so total volume. I think its always best to go a little bigger when it comes to a skimmer, so a G4 would be just about right for youre setup.

BTW, to all who have done a recirc mod, should the recirc pump output be above the intake, or vice versa?

It seems to me that if the output is below the intake, there would be more contact time, but it seems by the pictures that it is the opposite.
Any comments?

I haven't been keeping up with this thread, but I wanted to see if anyone has modded the impeller on the sedra 9000 by using either the gutter guard material or the heavy duty brush material.

Aha! So, I was doing it correctly :) I had bubbles in riser tube, but I guess it was too high. Skimmer overflowing daily :)

I have the GG and am planning on doing this mod in the next few days. I will try without removing the needlewheel and see if that gets any noticeable results. I have the G-4x on a 180. I am beginning to think that the 9000 may be a little weak for a skimmer with a 8" diameter. But, I will post up the results of the GG-Needlewheel intertwined mod.

Cliff,

Do you have any mods other than the impeller on youre G4X? I am getting ready to install a 4X on my 180 and was hoping it would kick butt.

Can'y wait to see how youre impeller mod does.

Good luck!

everyone look at phishy buisness, In the vendor/sponser section and check out the new GEO skimmers they look very close to the ASM's. I am going to try to supercharge my G6 some how,So far gate valve mod,and drilled out the air inlets and added biger hose. Any ideas after checking out the Geo's let me know, I am up for about anything...Marcus

I just finished modding my G4x. I have the return feeding it and I did the recirc mod with the sedra5000 that came with it. In the last hour it has produced more skimmate than it did in 2 weeks before the mods. I had to offset the pump using tubing because of size restriant but I think it has been the best mod I've done.

marcusbigdady,
THAT is a heck of a skimmer on youre 150! :)

Lyscer,
My 4X came with a 9000 and I cant wait to make it my recirc. pump. I think I'll feed it direct overflow via one of the drains.

Oh yea...

How did you configure you're pump for recirc? Was the output below the intake or above? Does it matter? Just keep it low right?

mr_timluu

I also have the mini and bought a sedra 2500. Have not really noticed a difference with the 2500 and am kind of dissappointed. I am starting to think that the mini is just flawed in design. It works, but not so well.

Yeah the pump is a 5000. The box it came in said 7000 but when I was lookinng at power consumption on the pump label I noticed it was a 5000. I know that they shipped the 5000 for quite a while with the 4x because I have heard of a handful of people that got them. SOunds like they figured out they were selling crap and upgraded the pump for the newer ones.

I have the output above the inlet. I have no idea if it matters, I may play with switching them around once I let it skim for a bit so I can guage how much it is actually pulling and see which way does better on my setup.

I have a G-1X. There is no "vent" in the collection cup or lid like the other skimmers I have used. Why is this and would it be a good idea to vent it? By vent it I mean for air to enter/escape and not the drain vent (put one of those in already).

Thanks in advance!

Thanks for the info Cliff. I'm going to pull out the impeller this weekend as well. Snap some pictures if you get a chance.

Certain about that?

Check carefully around the rim of the lid - you might notice that when you turn it to lock it in place? (you'll see some vent holes)

Asked the same question when I got a G4 :)

I have been reading through this monster thread becuase I am going to be getting 1 or 2 ASM G4 Plus's for my 240 gallon FOWLR tank I am setting up....

I've been specifically looking for water height of the sump that the skimmer will be placed in..

it seems 6-9 inches is ideal from what I have read....

my question is, is there a way in the sump to have your skimmer compartment at 6-9 inches but yet make the refugium compartment higher to say 12 inches or so..... i want to maximize the volume in my refugium but not at the cost of less skimmer efficiency.......

i am sure there is a way but i can't draw it out in my head....

Just rise the Skimmer like I did its really easy.

problem is I won't have any room to raise the skimmer. I have 27 inches to work with inside the stand. The skimmer is 24 inches tall, need the leftover inches to be able to move the cup and clean etc.....
