Attempting a red based magnifica

elegance coral

They call me EC
It attached right away, but wasn't sticky at all when I first got it. Got it on Tuesday. It seems to be getting a little more sticky, but it still can't capture food from the water.:( It has eaten a small pinch of mysis every day that I placed right next to the mouth. It hasn't crashed or deflated.........yet:rolleye1: It's a recent split. You can see the mouth right under the clown. It's way off center and you can still see where the collumn is healing. I have it under a 14k 175W MH. The clowns abandoned their LTA and jumped into the mag right away.

Well, here it is. What do you think?

nice, i just got a silmar color one, attached right away and start to move around, now sitting right in the middle of my rock work.
so is yours split in a home tank or from the ocean?

Thanks Todd. I just got home from buying a 40 breeder that will be the mags new home. I'll spend the weekend setting it up and plumbing it into an existing system. It will be about 150 total gallons.
I'm moving my haddoni into the 40 breeder as well. I figure they inhabit such different habitats that they shouldn't come into contact with each other. I've mixed these two species in the same system before without problem, so hopefully it will work this time as well. Now if I could just add the saddle backs for the haddoni and the perculas for the magnifica in the same tank, I would be set. Not gonna happen though.

Beautiful EC. Are the red ones supposed to be even harder?

Thanks. I don't think the reds are any more difficult than the others. I believe the species is difficult no matter what color you get. At least I hope this one isn't any more difficult than the others.

Very nice, good luck with him

Thanks Minh. If this one does as well as your yellow one, I'll be very happy.

Best of luck. It looks good in terms of coloration, i.e., it doesn't appear bleached from that pic.

Thanks for the luck. I'll probably need it.

You're right about the color. The teneacles are a dark brownish color. It's hard to get a pic of the true color under 14K lighting though.

The collumn is still pretty limp. It doesn't stand up like a healthy mag yet. It lays flat against the rock with its verrucae holding the polyp down in places. It still hasn't crashed and it keeps eating, so I'm hopefull.

I'm jealous of the color of the foot. We only seem to get purple around here. Maybe I'll find one someday, sigh. If your clowns are in it already, I'd bet it's doing alright. The specimen that I wrote about in my post went from the clown's avoiding it to in it constantly when it got better. I'm currently dealing with what I'm pretty sure is an allelopathy issue and it took a hit. The clowns are avoiding it again. Fortunately, it's still alive.

This is the first red one I've seen in my area as well.

Allelopathy from whom? Do you think it's from one of the other magnificas? I know some colonial anemones won't tolerate members from other colonies, even if they are the same species, but I am hoping magnifica is not that way. I would like to get a purple, maybe even a tan mag to go with this one. I think a small collection of different colored magnificas would make an awesome display. It would stink if they started doing battle though.

I can only hope for finding a healthy one. It took me years to find my yellow one.

That is the one thing I "hate" about clowns, the fact that they don't play nice with another pair.

In that breeder will you be able to give the Mag enough flow (( I believe that they like lots of it, but never kept one )) and still keep the Haddoni happy? All of mine are very touchy to too much flow. Moving a powerhead an inch has caused mine to move.

Good luck with him. Keep an eye on the haddoni, I had a haddoni for over a year, and it suddenly died 4 days after introducing my mag. I am not sure what happened except it might have been chemical war fair???? Hopefully it was just a random case????

Again good luck, it sure is beautiful,
Aaron

My haddoni doesn't like much flow either. I have a plan to get around this problem, but I don't know if it will work or not. I installed a coast to coast overflow. Hopefully that will help disperse the flow moving to the overflow. It won't all be moving to one corner of the tank. I'm installing a small CLS with a SCWD. I don't want any power heads in the tank. I have two intakes for the CLS near the bottom of the tank. They will be behind rocks with a good sized guard on them. This should keep the anemones out. I will split each discharge from the SCWD in two, so there will be 4 discharges pointing at the mag. Hopefully that will give the mag enough flow without blasting the whole tank. I guess we'll find out????

I worked on the tank today. This is how far I got. I still need to install the CLS guards and build the rest of the plumbing.

What you think so far?

That is a really good idea, and looks really good so far.

One good thing is that the Mag will be on the rocks, so your Haddoni will have free reign of the bottom to find a spot. And since you won't be using powerheads, don't have to worry about cleaning them and putting them put in the exact location.

Thanks Todd.

I have a very well behaved haddoni. It has only moved once and that was when its MH went out. It still had PC's but it took me two weeks to fix the MH. Other than that one time, he stays where I put him. I plan on building a horse shoe shape with some rocks and placing him in the middle. This should help block some of the flow. Hopefully he'll stay there. Like you said, I will be building a rock island for the magnifica on the other end of the tank.
