Attempting a red based magnifica

Good luck with him. Keep an eye on the haddoni, I had a haddoni for over a year, and it suddenly died 4 days after introducing my mag. I am not sure what happened except it might have been chemical war fair???? Hopefully it was just a random case????

Again good luck, it sure is beautiful,
Aaron

I've had some PC problems and haven't been able to post much.

I hope your case was just random. If these anemones start having problems, I'll move the haddoni back into the tank it's in now.

My magnifica has moved down the rock I placed it on. This seems a little strange to me. It has stuffed itself between the glass and a rock. There is lots of flow through that gap, so maybe that's why it did this. I'll try to get some pics up later today.

Here's an update.

She seems to be improving. I've been trying something a little different with this anemone. I usually feed new anemones twice a week. I've been feeding this one every morning. I think it likes the extra food. Still no crashing and its holding its polyp up off the rock like a mag should. Its also starting to get sticky. It can capture fish food from the water, but still doesn't eat it.

Looking good! Several indications (stickiness, eating, holding its column up) anemone is rebounding and on its way--I also think the clowns are helpful, at least when they are the right size to the anemone, as yours are.

looking great EC. If its not deflating at all yet, I think you have a winner.

Thanks, and I hope you're right. I don't want to get my hopes up quite yet, but things do seem to be going pretty good.:)

Looks great, I need to find one for myself!!

Great job.

The dementions of your tank would be perfect for a magnifica. That would make an awesome display.

I wish I could take credit for doing a great job with this anemone, but I think I simply got lucky. I think the hardest part of these anemones is finding one that's relatively healthy to begin with. I haven't really done anything special. Just give it plenty of flow, light, and food. Then pray alot.

I usually freak out when clowns jump into a new anemone before its had time to adjust to the new environment, but these are so small I don't think they can do much harm. They try to steal food from the anemone, but I keep them away long enough for the anemone to feed. When/if the feeding response improves this shouldn't be a problem any more.

My last magnifica would grab and eat any morsel of food that drifted by. I'll feel much better when this one reaches that point. Then the anemone will be stealing food from the clowns.

It is looking great, good luck with it. I love how the color varies from anemone to anemone, mine has a blue foot.

I got my CLS hooked up and running. I'm running a Mag 9.5 externally with a SCWD, and two discharges for each side. I plan on putting the magnifica right in the middle. What ya think?

My last one had a blue/purple foot. I plan on getting another one once this red one settles in.

The closed loop looks really neat, is the one tube with the slots in it the intake? Is the one tube on the right on the middle of the tank? Just trying to visualize it better -- any chance of getting a higher up shot -- showing the whole tank?

The pipe with the slits in it is the overflow that leads to the sump. The intakes for the closed loop are near the bottom of the tank. There is one in each corner. I should be able to hide them with LR. They are also adjustable. The PVC inside the tank isn't glued together, so I can move them around if I need to.
Here is one of them. Overlook the cloudiness. I'm mixing salt water in it right now.

Here is the top down FTS. And thanks Todd. I had to stand on a bucket of salt to get this shot, and stuck my head in the ceiling fan. The two pipes that sit on top of the tank have two discharges each. One in front and one in back. I have PVC 90's and 45's on each discharge so I can point them where I want. This should give the mag plenty of alternating flow on one half of the tank and lower flow for the haddoni. I won't know for sure until I try.

I almost feel bad for laughing at that. ;) Did you at least knock some dust off the fan while hitting it? ;)

But, thanks for the shot, it is very clear now. And I think that will work really well, gives you options to play with if the Haddoni isn't happy. Very nice.

I'm not worried about the dust. What about my concussion?

I've had the haddoni for a long time and have grown quite attached. If it starts showing any signs of stress, I'll move it back to it's own tank. I'm not about to deliberately make him uncomfortable. He's just to cool of a critter.:smokin:

Thanks Pacific Reefs and OrionN.

I bought enough supplies to build one MH reflector. I figured if it didn't go well I wouldn't bother with the other one. It went great. I have about $40 in materials. That's about 1/3 the price of a new one. I'll build the other one probably this weekend. These two reflectors together will pretty much cover the whole top of the tank. I was thinking about adding two T5 actinics but I won't have room for them.

Here's my first reflector. What ya think?:D
