Flow and larvae don't mix. Make sure you turn all the pumps off while you are catching them.

Usually 20-30 minutes after your lights turn off. Just be careful not to shine a flashlight on them as this may disrupte the hatch (so I have heard anyway)

I think I am going to go buy an ammonia test kit.

That is all!

FB

You're just getting an Amonia test now??? LOL Want to borrow mine? I have doubles and tripples of every test known to man and don't use any of them! Too lazy! LOL

I have one but it is 3 years old and last time I used it, it said my ammonia was 8ppm. I don't think it works anymore!

Just sold another 31 fish. Although I have not yet received money or anything else for any of them yet, in total 36.

Later FB
Just spoke to the owner and he said he lost all 31 fish. He said they did great for 5 days and then started gasping for air and swimming in circles.

I told him I would replace them, not sure if I should but so far he is the only one buying them.

However he said he had a bunch of tanks that he didn't transfer to the new store and said he would give them to me to use for growout. They are all drilled and he thinks the bulkheads are still on them.

He said he also ordered me a pair of B&W from his Hawaii wholesaler.

My Metal Halides go off at 9pm at which time my Koralia 4 (right side) goes off as well (reduced nightime flow). My Actinics go out at 10pm (moonlights come on) and my Koralia 3 (left side) stays running to help push my brine shrimp away from the overflow. (They usually hatch around midnight) I also have my skimmer set to shut down from 11pm to 4am to allow any miscellaneous brine shrimp to safely flow into my sump/refugium. I've now turned off the moonlights on the left side to hopefully keep the larvae on the right, away from the powerhead and overflow.

My wife is going ballistic about the amount of time I've been "babysitting" this thing! :mad2:

I'm just curious what would happen if the hatch is disrupted if you know, FB? Would the rest of the eggs just hatch the next day or would the batch just be worthless?

Thanks

"Just spoke to the owner and he said he lost all 31 fish. He said they did great for 5 days and then started gasping for air and swimming in circles."

That's really strange Honestly I think its something he did. How old were they?

"I told him I would replace them, not sure if I should but so far he is the only one buying them."

I would replace them as well to save the relationship.

"However he said he had a bunch of tanks that he didn't transfer to the new store and said he would give them to me to use for growout. They are all drilled and he thinks the bulkheads are still on them."

Very cool that will be nice

"He said he also ordered me a pair of B&W from his Hawaii wholesaler."

Clown addict :)

Flashlight can and does postpone larvae hatching, trust me on this it's happened to me. Waiting half hour is not so bad but waiting until 1 in the morning is a completely different story. ;)

Sounds like oxygen depletion to me. It's a pretty new fish setup and maybe something went wrong. The 5 previous I gave him were in the same system for over 2 weeks.

The way I figure it I could lose 31 fish tonight so I have no problems replacing them. I wouldn't call it saving the relationship just more of a joint partnership. Without him I get nothing.

I'm not to worried it is just diappointing know how much work goes into those fish. They were about 5 months old and about 1" long, some 1 1/4"

Hey why not add another pair.

Day 7 Egg Photo

I think tomorrow is the night.

I'm on egg patrol! :worried: Sitting, watching, waiting... All is quiet, only left side power head on, right side moonlights on. Hopefully it'll draw/push them to the right side of the tank so I can get them. I sure hope they hatch tonight.

Mine looks like yours, FB and I think I'm on day 7 as well. Does this mean tonight may not be the night? Is there anyway I can tell?

Gold striped maroons.

Gold striped maroons.

Hi guys,

I live in Australia and am so jealous of the supply you guys get in the US. Australia has very strict quarantine rules so the hobby is really stunted here.

Anyway - I have a pair of spawining GSM and I would like to try(* try being the key word) to rear the young. Anyone done this with the GSMs?

Thanks

Rick

Just did a transfer to get another 5 gallon ready for tonights hatch. I had 186 that survived from the July 11th hatch. This is my highest yet! :D Even better this was the hatch that I had a fish sitter for almost 10 days starting when they were only about day 14.

More to come!
