FB; congrats & best of luck to you. Nice idea with the colored paint & count method. I just went and did the same thing to my tile picture that i have and i was a bit baffled i thought i had around 50 to 60 eggs on the tile. but when i blew up the pic and marked them off i came up with 136.

What did you use for "Paint" ??
Thanx

Microsoft "Paint" You know that standard program you get with windows. It's under the Accessories tab

Until I took the last picture I always thought maybe 200 eggs. But 900 holy crap!

I tried to pull some rotifers from my culture this morning and there were basically none. So out of desperation I feed my 6 hour old larvae BBS. I figure I have nothing to lose. It appeared some ate them but others had no interest. We will see what happens when I get home tonight. I'm hoping most will take to the BBS and leave what little rotifers I have to the smaller guys who need them.

It's time for a complete restarting of my rotifers cultures. New water, new phyto, new philosophy. I went with the 10 gallon tanks as that was what was need to get enough rotifers to feed 40 - 50 larvae. They are complicated to maintain with their size and It's obviously not working for me. With 900 larvae I am going to need to do this better.

lol, I just called my wife and asked her if you had to take a guess at how many eggs were on the tile that i pulled out to try and hatch, what would your guess be? and she said about 50 or so and I thought woooh guess i am not retarded after all, lol. Then i told her i came up with the 136 #. I still can't believe it maybe our eyes are playing tricks on us....

900 is a bunch for sure wow.

I thought the same thing! I figured maybe between 100-200. Then I used the paint program to mark and count, and my last clutch was...................481 !

My loving wife is on her way to pick me up 2 bags of rotifers. I will feed one bag to the larvae and start a new culture with the other.

Hopefully most of the larvae will still be alive to feed!

I had been to this site before but reading it again highlighted some mistakes I have been making. I did note that is says glass aquariums don't work well, not sure why?? I guess I'm going the bucket method.

A very good read for anyone just starting out

:mad2: booooo i just went & picked up 2 5g tanks for my rotifers because the 5g buckets i have been using are to hard to tell how green the water is in them. I figured i could at least see thru the 5g tank. Looks like i have some more reading to go do.

You can get better circulation patterns in circular tanks, but quite frankly I find that a standard glass aquarium works quite fine. Just place your aeration in a corner and adjust to a very gentle flow. Like with phyto, no air stone.

Well the two bags of rotifers my wife picked up were completely dead even though they had a good till date of June 10th. I guess I'm going to have to call the company and get this resolved again. Last time they more than made up for it, it just frustrating when you ussually only need them when you buy them...Imagine that!!!!

Last night I completely emptied one of my 10 gallon rotifers cultures. The culture was not in good shape but did have some rotifers in it. I put it all into my larvae tank. When I woke up this morning I still had hundreds of them alive. I did not have enough rotiers to bother feeding to the larvae this morning so I fed bbs. It appeared most of the clowns ate away and had round bellies when I left for work this morning.

I contacted the company who supplies the rotifers and this was the response I got.

We apologize for the inconvenience.
We will be making a delivery first thing tomorrow morning to XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX We will include a green bag that will be labeled with your name on it with some replacement product. We will make sure that you have more than enough Rotifer to go around.

I will also let one of the guys know that this is specifically for you and is at no charge.
Everytime I have had an issue with this company they have been nothing but great.

You painted your eggs? I wonder if the colors will stay after hatching...
Sorry, couldn't resist. :) Great work on the hatch!

J.

They did actually stay different colours. I have started pairing off different colours and will be selling them as "Rainbow Mated Pairs" They are very rare

So I went back to the LFS today to pick up my replacement rotifers. I received 3 bags of rotifers and one bag of phyto. It is really nice to see a company that really cares about it's customers.

I am currently in the process of restarting my rotifer cultures. I am trying a couple of things this time.

The first bag I used to try something new. I took a 2 litre pop bottle and drilled a hole in the bottom. Placed my finger over the hole and filled the bottle with rotifers and aged saltwater. I then placed the 2 litre pop bottle in a brine shrimp hatchery. Started with a very slow bubble rate. We shall see how it goes.

The second bag I used with a small white salt bucket. Place the rotifers in the bucket and added aged saltwater. I used rigid air tubing to bubble at the side of the bucket.

I was going to try and start one of my 10 gallon cultures again but the water changes and maintenance is far to great. I realized if I can do a couple of smaller cultures better I will be much farther ahead than doing a large culture poorly.

Anyway my current hatch is doing well. I'm almost positive their are still 100+ in the culture.

Later

I wish I could just go pickup that stuff. I have to drive 2 hours or so. Good luck with the rots.

You can order off their website. They are located in Newmarket.
