Easy fix

Thanks DSmack, VSPeck and Smoothdog!

Also, I just checked the water parameters. The diatom boom tells me its ready.... but here is what I found:
1.024/Ammo:0/Nitrite:0/ Nitrate:0/ Phosphate: 0!!/pH 8.5... with API kits.
Thats with 1 month of biopellets in a media bag ( reactor is still coming), and cheto for 2 weeks in the refugium.
But strangely: dKh 7.6/ Cal 430/ Mg 1600!! with Red Sea Kits......

What do I do with that high mag?? Is it going to be harmful? I believe its not toxic levels. In humans if mag is too high for too long then it causes muscle weakness, loss of reflex, that is transient.

Is there anything to be done about it?
Please advice.

Another issue: Seems like one of my 300W glass heater has already given up in <3 months, grrrrrr. I am going to get Catalina titanium 800W and get an external temperature controller, saw some on amazon.

Thank you everyone!

Try testing your mag with a different kit. Maybe go to a store and have them test it. From my experience the red sea mag test was high. It could have been me too. I like salifert test

If mag truly is that high, it's not a problem. Taking mag that high to kill off bryopsis is done all the time.

I took mine to 1900 on a Salifert test before the bryopsis was gone :lmao:
Things got a little out if hand

800w heater? That's a biggin. I would head over to Premiumaquatics dot com and get a nice eheim jager heater.

Thanks for all the advice.

I learnt 2 more new thing:

A: Red sea mag test Kit: Mix each of the five drops of reagent A individually, but if you don't you'll get erroneous results: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MofaqM-I6uM

B: Kill bryopsis with high mag.

My plan from all the advice:

1: Re test the DT water at home with same kit
2: If abnormal, test it at LFS with a diff kit.
3: Mix fresh batch of saltwater and test it, if that is a cause.

I will report back when Im done with above.:fun4:

heater

heater

I just checked that premiumaquatics site, pretty good collection of stuff.

My amazon order went through pretty fast and its shipped, or I would have looked into getting one from them.
I got that 800W coz in this winter( until yesterday) my 2 300W in-sump in the unheated basement was unable to maintain temp, it would drop to 72s.

Also, along with my new 800 heater, I plan on having 2 electronic controls & probes on it, one come with the heater and Im adding another additional control.
This is what I plan to do with them:
1: The additional one will be the one mainly controlling the temp. Ill set it at 77.
2: The one with the heater, will be set at 78/79 and will be a back up, if first one ever fails, this one will kick in and heat until 78/79.

Make sense? Please correct me if Im wrong.:fish1:

Thank you

Heater placement

Heater placement

Guys,

What is the best place for the temp sensor probes and the heater, in the sump. I have 3 compartments there.

( currently I had only heaters, so i placed them in the return comp)

Thank you

Put the heaters where they will get the most turbulent flow (usually the first chamber where your overflow drains into) put the temp probe in the dislplay, if the display is not an option put it as far away from the heaters in the sump as you can.

New pumps look nice, that will give you a lot of options!

Thanks Smoothdog.

My sump has 3 comp ( left overflow drain, middle extra refuge, right return) and its in the basement. So putting the probe up in the DT would be difficult.
if I put the heater in the left overflow drain....and probe in the return area... ( the farthest) Im not sure that it will be far enough?
How about probe in the refuge and heater in the return area?

About the dosing pump. What else can it be used for, other then alk, cal, mag?

Thank you!

My sump has 3 chambers as well. I have the heaters in the center and temp probe in the return area. Kind of close but I also have a thermometer in the display and it stays consistent there too so I'm happy with it.

My dosers drip in the return section. I use mine for cal and Alk and I need to get one for mag but I have thought about using them for auto waterchange but I don't know how fast those are and what your total water volume is.
