Awesome marshall island pics

I doubt there are many fish tanks out there big enough to house a clam that size...looks to be nearly 3ft long. Must be really heavy, and must suck up Ca/Alk like no other! Still awesome though  I can't wait to go SCUBA in the Pacific, I'm getting certified this winter.

I got certified 7 years ago, diving is like no other, it's incredible. And any diver out there will say exactly that. I think anyway. lol

Those clams are HUGE!!! Here's a pic of mine...It's probally 1/10 of the size. My tank is 64" long...the gigas is about 18"-24".

OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG:D:D:D THAT IS THE COOLEST THING I HAVE EVER SEEN!

how long have you had it, is it T.R.?

or is it wild, and estimate on price?lol jw:D

Giant clams like that I have seen at the lfs's for around $100-$300 for about a 15 incher. My Derasa has gotten to be about 10 inches now! Huge yet nothing like the giant clams at about 3 feet or so.

This was my derasa when I got him about two years ago.

This is the clam now! For size comparison, the derasa next to it is 5 inches.

Thanks. I bought it pretty big. I've had it about 4 months now and it has grown a decent amount. Between my clams and my SPS's, I've got my Kalk and dual chamber Calcium reactors running at full tilt.

I paid $250 for it. Clamsdirect had a comprable sized one for $400. Big clams weigh so much and need a decent amount of water during shipping that the shipping weight for the wholesalers is relatively high. The problem is that stores have a hard time finding people with a large enough tank or enough space for a 2' clam.

so is that a natural population of clams? or where they put there for some sort of mariculture? it just seems odd to me that they are all the same size. why not any smaller, younger ones mixed in? maybe all the smaller ones have been harvested for dinner? maybe they were placed there to be broodstock to repopulate the area?

Not sure, but by the growth of coral on the clam shells they have stayed there for many years. If you look closly there are smaller clams roughly 10 inches, "mid right" and a shell if you look closly about 8 inches or so bottom right. I would say those have grown up thier.

I am a diver stuck in the middle of TX. That is why I got into reefing. I take mini dives every day!

It's amazing how those corals survive being exposed to the open air during low tide. Thanks for sharing the pictures they are beautiful. Hopefully one day I can go to some place like that and spend a couple of weeks exploring.
